Alright, I need help from the Canadians in the bunch in helping to make my Craig feel at home. What are your ideas for things to make a Canadian feel more at home in the US? I already plan on finding a good perogie recipe and making them for him. I'd like to see if there is anyway to get get Cheez Whiz (Canadian, not American) shipped to us. I have a nice big Canadian flag hanging in the apartment. Of course, I'll do the normal things like having a drawer cleaned out for him and have all this shampoo and stuff. But what else?

Thanks!

I think you two are so freaking cute.

I don't have too much advice - I had similar questions when Stewart got here - but really I think it's less about doing CANADIAN stuff and more about just making space for him in your life and in your home. Does that make sense?

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

I am the Canadian immigrant, and I was very surprised at all the differences between Canada and U.S., most of which I was not aware of.

I've been here for almost 3 years now, and I still miss Canada and I still miss my family and friends that I left behind. I don't know if there was any one thing that my husband could have done to make me feel more at home, other than what he already did.

He ALWAYS puts on the CBC channel on the t.v. for me to watch and jokes with me about my Ice Capps at Tim Horton's. It just takes time to adjust to being away from home, no matter what country you come from.

If I had any suggestions at all to give, it would be to make sure you introduce him to lots and lots of people so he can make some friends and keep busy.

Good luck to you both.

Have Hockey on TV

Learn to play "Oh Canada" on the Kazoo

??

Just a couple of thoughts :) Mostly, just have some good fun.. We Canadians love to laugh at each other and the world around us. I was trying to think what would help me feel more at "home" in CT.. Hmmmm.. have to think on that one - You can't really change spelling, the weather, your beer, or make everyone around you say "eh".. but you could call his stocking cap a "touque" and make all the signage in your house/apt. in both official languages!!

tee hee

You seem like an amazing couple. He will always feel at home I am sure..

:)

OOOH have all your friends over for a "Kitchen Party" full of drinks, food and music.. That is always a good time (more us East Coasters though).. :)

Do American's do board games?? We do board games ALL the time where I'm from. My fiancée didn't play "games" the same way we did when we were kids.. Just a thought..

Put up a picture calendar from Canada that has the Canadian official holidays on it - there are more than in the States. Surprisingly, I often found myself thinking about Canada on days like Victoria Day, Canada Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, August Civic Holiday and Thanksgiving - because they were holidays for everyone I knew back home but just ordinary, nothing special days here. I felt more alone on those days. You can always wish him special wishes for that particular day. Maybe that calendar can have some scenes of Canada on it. Do a Canadian Thanksgiving for him the 2nd Monday in October. Find out the website for the daily newspaper from his home town -and maybe the weeklies if he read those - plus the website for CBC (www.cbc.ca) and give them to him so he can check up on what is happening with friends and family back home. Just reading the daily news for the first little while helped to abate homesickness. Check out the website for the closest Canadian Consulate and have him register there or at the Connect2Canada website - they will keep him advised on news that is important to Canadians living in the US, plus provide local opportunities to meet up with other Canadians at special events around the year (you're invited too, of course!).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

You guys really are so adorable :) I am sure that he will feel at home because he is home with you :)

Some things I have done to make my Canadian fiance feel at home when he has been with me in NH:

Buy his favorite Canadian junk food. I am lucky that I live an hour and a half from the border, so I have made many junk food runs. The border guards seem to think it is cute.

My guy loves Old Dutch brand chips, and I couldn't find them in Quebec province, so I ordered them online and had them sent for his b-day ($25 dollars for 4 bags of chips!!!! but it was worth it to see the look on his face).

Celebrate Canadian holidays .... made a nice meal for his Thanksgiving and talked to his mother first to find out what was traditional in his family.

Take off your shoes when you enter the house. My guy has got me doing that and I really do appreciate the custom.

Good luck when he arrives and enjoy your life together!

If he's a Tim Horton's fan, definitely get him some Tim Horton's coffee and mugs and whatever else they sell there. The junk food is a great idea too, whatever he likes (does he like ketchup chips? hard to find the states). Maybe his friends and family can help you put together a big Canadian care package and send to you to surprise him with it?

CBC definitely if you have cable or access to CBC.

How about framed pictures of his home town/city as well?

I think its truly important that you keep up with what we Canadian men expect from their women; keep the house clean, fridge stocked with cold Canadian beer and always have clean clothes at the ready, and realize the TV remote is off limits to you!! I'm sure he will truly appreciate it and will feel right at home!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Aw, you guys are so sweet! Mel did nice things for me, he hung a Canadian Flag outside the house, next to the American flag. Some of his friends made comments, but I got in their face over that :) He ordered a Kids in the Hall DVD set off the Internet. From here, Mel loves ketchup chips and Molson Cold Shots, so I will bring some of those for him.
