Marriage Certificates

Available for marriages entered into under civil law from the Principal Registrar of Marriages, C/O Registrar General's Office, P.O. Box 118, Accra, Ghana. There is a fee for this service. Most marriages are performed under customary law, and written records are kept only if the couple chooses to register the marriage with the local council. Persons married under customary law who subsequently wish to marry under civil law must obtain a civil marriage certificate which reflects the words "married under native customary law" in the space provided for "condition." Polygamous marriage is permissible under the customary law of some groups, but not under civil law.

our marriage certificate was green and white and it is rectangular really kinda long. we were married by the registrar in accra.

Hello Lou-nic,

My husband and I had a church ceremony in Ghana and received the certificate that looks like what you have described after going through the needed steps for obtaining a marriage license from the AMA. We submitted our marriage certificate to the NVC and the NVC has checklisted it saying it is not an original bearing the seal from the authority they recognize.

Did you get married at the Registrar General's Dept and does your certificate bear some kind of a seal?

Regards,

Natanna

I looked and it doesn't look like there is a seal on it. it has a licence no a certificate number the date says its form c says where we got married then has no. I think that may be the registrars number maybe then it has our names age, condition, rank or profession, residence at time of marriage, fathers name and surname, fathers profession. then it is signed by 2 witness's and us and the registrar. hope this helps. sorry I forgot I had the photo copy
