Changing your Place of Residence

I have searched VJ as best as I could but I have not found an answer to my question.

My US husband applied for a DCF for me. He was able to prove he had solid ties to the USA. We are retired and don't have children. At this stage of our lives, we are not tied to a location but the I-864 forces us to be. I was thrilled to get my immigration visa 3 weeks ago and we are ready buy our plane tickets. Unfortunately, I have been having some 2nd thoughts about settling in the location that was written in the I-864.

Do we have a legal obligation to live in the Place of Residence that was written in the I-864 form or are we allowed to we change our minds?

You're allowed to change your minds. Your husband will need to file an I-865 after any address changes are made.

You simply notify USCIS of any change of address through their website...you can also call them. Part of the purpose of the address is to mail notifications...as well as to establish a place of residence in the US. But, you can move anytime.

notify USCIS of new address

We always understood that I, as a new immigrant, had to notify the USCIS of a change of address for the life of the GC.

I hope you all are right that we have a legal right to change our address before we set foot in the USA.

My husband is concerned since he signed the I-864 showing and providing proof of US domicile at one location that he might have a legal problem after changing it to a new stateside location.

We realize this is not the normal life situation for most future GC holders.

You have a legal right to change your address, situations can and do change; the relevant authorities understand that.
