I got confused. My USC fiance's Accountant told him that US Embassy will look at the "adjusted gross income." How true is that? Don't they look at the "Gross Income"?

United States tax code is confusing for those of us who were born here, so don't feel so bad.

Income that you receive from your job, plus income that you receive from investments, plus tax refunds from previous years, plus unemployment benefits, all add together to form gross income.

Some things are then deducted from gross income. For example, if you pay your ex-spouse alimony, that's a deduction from your gross income and an addition to your ex- income. There are some other items where it has been determined that they should be subtracted from your gross income. When you add all your deductions up, and then subtract the total deductions from the gross income, you arrive at the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).

Usually AGI will be a little less than Gross Income. In some cases, it can be substantially less.

Regards,

Bill

Thank you for your response. However, my question is if the Consul will look at the "Gross Income" or the "Adjusted Gross Income" to determine if we are above poverty level. Any idea? Thank you.

I am looking at my 2013 Tax Return Form 1040

Line 22 is: Total Income

Line 37 is : Adjusted Gross Income

I would think they would use line 22: Total Income

:crying: My fiance's line 22 is the same with the adjusted gross income. But his schedule C (Form 1040) has his gross receipts or sales in "Part 1 Income." Will this work?

The total adjusted income is really low while the gross receipts are way above the poverty level. I am getting scared. My interview is on Friday, July 18. Hope you can clarify. Thank you so much.

Anybody can help too.

yup, line 22

Schedule C is not where the embassy looks for his gross income, line 22 of the 1040 is.

Geesh... His line 22 shows an amount that is below the poverty line. Would the current checkstubs be sufficient support document for I-134? We are also planning to request for a transcript of the total amount that the companies he serves has given him since the start of this year. Or what could be the possible documents for us to submit? Thank you.
