To do the waiver, you HAVE TO get a lawyer. If anything goes wrong, only a lawyer can represent you. We paid $400 to get it done (total was about $1000 with the waiver fee, which is $680). A lawyer is your best option to get it done quickly and with few complications if any. Stand your ground and let them know that you know that few waivers have been done if you are using the new amendment through a US citizen wife or husband. So, they don't really know what they are doing, which gives you and advantage when it comes to payment. Ask how many waivers they have done and if they have proof. Ask to speak to someone who has done the waiver successfully with them. If they get upset, move on. Itsa red flag when a lawyer is not willing to backup expertise with evidence. Either way, you need a lawyer. Just read up also so you are well informed about the process so a lawyer doesn't try to rip you off.
