Bringing money over

Do I need to bring in cash, disclose it, and then deposit it into my new account with my husband? Or can I do my POE and transfer the funds to our account a week and a bit later?

You can transfer it at any time. It's easier to do it electronically. If you cross the border with a wad of cash over $10k then you have to fill out paperwork. If its done electronically, the bank reports it.

TD Told me I could write a cheque to myself and deposit he just said would probably take 15days to clear so I may do that

the US doesn't like Canadian cheques. I suggest a US money order instead or just wire transfer (or do the TD transfer if you have banks in both countries.)

I've had better rate with xe.com than any other system... no fee, good rate, no hassle. You can have the funds delivered electronically to your bank account or a draft, to be deposited later.

Not always true judging from some people's posts but I know from my personal experience.....my bank here in Virginia lost their mind at the idea of cashing a Canadian cheque....the teller didn;t have a clue, so annoying

I'm not going to day much as there are many posts on this (search) if ur bringing(transferring) over a large sum of $$$, best to take ur time and research the best route.....Just because a bank states there is NO fees, does not mean thats the best avenue to take....One has to look at the whole picture (exchange rate, etc)
