Quick question,

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but I was looking at the DS-156K and noticed you need to provide "Evidence of Engagement". After a few searches I haven't found anything concrete.

Like many other people, we don't have a ring yet, so that crosses off the most obvious of proof!

Would this just be our updated letters of intent, plus proof of ongoing relationship?

Thanks!!

I never even noticed that when we filled out the DS-156K and they didn't ask for anything. I think in our "relationship" proof there was a copy of the ring receipt and some "congratulations on your engagement cards" but it certainly wasn't asked for as a separate point. Updated letters of intent and relationship proof should certainly cover it. Ring receipts don't mean much IMO.

We had a receipt for the engagement ring, but we were not asked for anything at the interview...will you have a ring by time the interview comes around? Otherwise i would think that proof of your ongoing relationship may be enough. Do you have photos from your engagement or cards etc? If you have anything at all from your engagement i would take it to the interview because you never know what they will ask for.

We didn't provide any engagement proof with our application.

We provided our letters of intent and were never asked for anything more, except proof of ongoing relationship like emails, phone bills, letters, etc.

Well, the DS-156K that I downloaded looks different from the one on this site. It's from a government site, and the date is good until the middle of this year.

http://foia.state.gov/FORMS/visa/ds0156k.pdf

It says:

"THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS MUST BE ATTACHED IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR A FIANCE(E) NONIMMIGRANT VISA.

Your Birth Certificate

Birth Certificates of All Children Listed in Number Five

Death Certificate of Spouse (if any)

Marriage Certificate (if any)

Divorce Decree (if any)

Police Certificates

Evidence of Engagement to Your Fiancé(e)

Evidence of Financial Support"

We will most likely not have the ring by then. He's fresh out of school, I'm still a student, and we earn like students! We're saving up for something later on.

Thank you for the info, Cassie.

Do you remember if your DS-157K looked like the one I posted? I'm not sure if it's a newer version because the one on this site is different.

Hi, Kinsey,

I just had my interview yesterday in Tokyo and I didn't have any evidence of our

"engagement" because I had nothing to prove it. No ring, no engagement letter. I

was convinced "evidence of the engagement" written in the 156K meant "evidence

of the relationship" written in the instructions for the applicants.

I just brought evidence of our relationship, five photos we took in Japan last March

and an e-mail from my fiance. And I was wearing a pendant he gave me eleven years

ago. I didn't have to submit any of the evidence and the consul didn't ask me to show

them at the interview at all. He just asked me where we met and what we were doing

then. They didn't even ask me to submit my fiance's documents which were in the

instructions, the original copy of my fiance's divorce dicree or a letter of intent and request

of an extention of the I129F.

I think in some countries they will ask you to submit the evidence if your relationship is

doubtful.

Good luck.

Mieko

I don't have a ring, and I won't have one when I have my interview either... all I'm going to be taking as 'evidence of our engagement' is an updated letter of intent from each of us, along with a pile of general 'ongoing relationship' evidence. I should think that signed letters from each of us saying that we intend to marry the other and comply with the requirements of the K1 visa, etc etc, would be proof enough. I hope so, anyway!

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

Phew!

I don't know why they insist on phrasing things differently on different forms. As if the process isn't complicated enough.
