Son wants to go back to Canada for school year

So my 14 year old son is thinking about going to stay with his dad in Canada for the next school year. Can he do that without losing his GC?

Hi,

Get him a Re-Entry Permit before he leaves the US. The Re-Entry Permit allows him to be outside the US for up to 2 years without losing his GC.

Thank you. He will be crossing to visit me at least once a month, and probably school holidays.

Crossing once a month and holidays may not be enough, as you will have to register him in school and I'm betting his father will put down that he lives in Canada at a his home. That action alone can cause him problems.

Other members whose children had gone back home to school had to be sure to register them as a foreign student and pay tuition as such in order to not lose their GC's on top of the re entry permit.

There is a re-entry permit one can obtain, as mentioned above....http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Resources/B5en.pdf No clue how it works if one comes back into the USA in a back and forth manner. There may be away with education, some kind of loophole (for lack of a better word)???? best of luck
