Anything they pay out after your departure date, CRA will ask to be reimbursed. There is a form you have to fill out to inform them that you have left the country and are no longer a resident.

I think its the NR73 on this page. It also has departure tax information.

The OP is referring to cheques received from the Canadian government - the advice below isn't relevant

To stop a check you have to notify your bank pay the fees. Unless your bank has online baking where you do it online. usually have to pay a fee. (What is HST Cheques?)

Rob and Monika's advice is right on. I failed in my initial attempt to stop them and I ended up owing CRA a nice chunck of money.

Definitely worth contacting them. It may take a couple tries - I think gthey always seem surprised when hyou wnat to stop moeny from coming to you ;)

Oh shoot... I forgot about this. I got a cheque in April, one of the affordable living cheques they have in Nova Scotia. I never even thought at the time about not being eligible for it. Is there no way at all to do it online? I hate calling government things. Darn...$160 is not easy for us to pay back right now with me not working. I wish I had realized at the time and I would of called them right away and not had it deposited. :(

We didn't realize it until it was tax time, so a whole year had gone by of HST deposits. I think we sent out the NR73 in Feb or March this year (there may have been a phone call involved, I don't remember), and the departure taxes were sent in early April. We received the bill for about $440 earlier this week...lol so it is fresh on my mind.

Well, I guess I'll fill that out now... Think I should still call?

I don't have the direct deposite so, it's not like the cheques will get cashed. They're sent to my mother's address so, maybe I'll just have her "send back to sender"
