My current situation is that I have not worked since last september, and will be starting medical school this August meaning that I have no income for now and the next four years.

This obviously means that I have no current income to show, which worries me as I am starting the process of applying for a K-1 visa for my fiance in South Korea.

I can show that I have about 35,000$ in the bank, Perfect credit, and that I am 100% sure I will have a decent paying job in four years after I graduate medical school.

My question is, does the consulate in South Korea accept co-sponsers for the I-134 Affidavit of Support form, and if so, if I use a good friend of mine who I lived with for 2 years in college as a co-sponsor, will that be sufficient? He graduated and is currently making about ~60k as an engineer.

This question also applies to the subsequent change of status and application for the green card. Would the same situation/sponsor work?

Me and my fiance both hold undergraduate degrees from respected institutions.

If anybody could let me know, this would be GREATLY appreciated

Thanks!

Instructions for your consulate mention joint sponsors with the I-134, so yes, they will accept them, http://photos.state.gov/libraries/korea/187344/PDF_Dec09/iseo35k1.pdf

After you are married and file for AOS, the I-864 also allows for the use of a joint sponsor.

Ahh I guess im kind of skeptical of the whole thing, after all what's stopping me from hiring a guy off the street to co-sponser, if it could be my friend.

Maybe I should include evidence of my relationship with my co-sponser to?

There seems to be no information about this.

Thanks so much!

Technically it can be any US citizen or legal permanent resident with residence anywhere in the US. If you asked someone off the street and they were willing, then they could do it. However, some consulates are more likely to accept the co-sponsor if they are a relative or close friend. Usually not something that is needed, but I do not think it would hurt at all to include a statement showing that you are close friends and lived together.

For more info/research on the matter, Google this > 9 FAM 40.41 N5.6-3 Use of Form I-134, Affidavit of Support

NOTE: When there are compelling or forceful ties between the applicant and the sponsor, such as a close family relationship or friendship of long standing, you may favorably consider the affidavit. On the other hand, an affidavit submitted by a casual friend or distant relative who has little or no personal knowledge of the applicant has more limited value. If the sponsor is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR), the likelihood of the sponsor's support of an immigrant visa (IV) applicant until the applicant can become self-supporting is a particularly important consideration.

From my experience ... my fiancé was approved for a K-1 visa at the US Embassy in Seoul with my dad being a co-sponsor. So answering your question yes they accept co-sponsors ... family, friends ... just need to get the necessary documents for I-134 for yourself and the co-sponsor.

Don't worry ... and turn in your application soon! :D
