To the poster whose spouse is a student and who is covered under their parent's insurance, you may want to look into coverage through the university as a married couple. Universities usually provide very reasonable coverage for their students and dependents. You may find that joint coverage at the university is cheaper than private coverage for yourself … and if your spouse is their parents' only child, then they would realize a savings as well without him on their plan. Shuffling the dollars around may lead to a good plan that works for everyone.

A very long time ago when I was between jobs, I enrolled in classes which had the additional benefit of affordable health care coverage for me and my family which was significantly less than the COBRA coverage i would have needed otherwise.

Thankyou, yes we did look into it, was surprisingly more expensive than I thought. Right now I am looking into the whole obamacare thing, seeing what it is in comparison. Hoping to have something this week..I don't like going any amount of time without!

Happy I found this thread. I'm kind of in the same situation. My husband's insurance comes from Germany (I'm not too clear on the exact details, but his parents took care of it for him 5 years ago and he's been covered under that ever since). I highly doubt I could be added under the same policy (although we'll try). I'll be starting work/school a little bit after I move to the US, but I don't know what to do in the meantime.. and I really don't understand how Obamacare works tbh :P Any suggestions?

I am the beneficiary.

Unlikely any German Insurance would meet Obamacare requirements.

Well it's German-based, but used only for coverage in the US, as in he's fully covered in the US. :/

I am the beneficiary.

Nobody is fully covered, wherever they buy Insurance.

Insurance is a very heavily regulated industry, to sell qualified Insurance the Company needs to be registered and regulated in the State he is Resident in.

I have been trying to apply for obamacare on the healthcare.gov website for the past week+..sooo annoying, freezes on me and now I can't even log in! Keeps saying they have to confirm my identity before I can pick a plan. I am going to have to call tonight to get coverage before the 31st..but would much rather just complete it all online. I miss Canada and the coverage I had there!

Wouldn't the spouse losing coverage from her home country constitute a change of status and allow for the addition of the spouse to the insurance plan? That's my wife and I's plan after she gets here.

11/11/2013 Paid I-184 Bill
11/18/2013 Paid IV Application Processing Fees
03/03/2014 DS-260 was submitted online
03/03/2014 Submitted supporting documentation for I-864 and DS-260 (IV Package and AOS supporting documentation)
03/19/2014 Received receipt e-mails stating the documents for both I-864 and DS-260 had been attached to the case. Stated to wait up to 20 business days for processing
03/26/2014 Received a checklist regarding the birth certificate. This was previously provided in an email. Investigating what was wrong with the birth certificate.
03/26/2014 Called the NVC and was told this was likely because we accidentally submitted a "short form" birth certificate rather than a "long form", but we knew that wasn't the case.
03/26/2014 Wife called back to NVC and they told her that it was because the form was "too decorative". The lady on the phone told her to wait 25 days as she'll forward it to a supervisor.

Yes it would - talk to your Benefits/HR admin at work and you can advise them that this change is coming up and they can tell you what you have to do. I wouldn't assume anything and every plan is different. Some make you wait until the next Open Enrollment period of the plan at work, although that is not common.
