I'm 50 years old been living in the US my whole life and sometimes I feel like I don't belong here. It can be very strange here at times, people flip like a switch.

I lived in Canada growing up for almost 26 or so years and I felt exactly the same up there. I hated living in Canada and didn't like the people or how things were run or anything. I actually chose my college (University of Windsor) just to be next to the US so I could at least visit there as much as possible.

Finally got my ### out and moved to the US on a work status way before getting married and have never once wanted to ever go back (except to visit friends and family maybe once a year or two).

I actually left my much higher paying job to come here as well and it all worked out. Now if you were asking if I would move to another state other than Colorado with the same job and salary etc, then hell yeah (though as mentioned I would love SoCal, but my salary would be useless to survive there)...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I wouldn't be moving to the US if it wasn't for my soon to be husband, I had plans to move to Alberta to get a better paying job in my field (I am from NS...jobs are scarce here). We thought he'd go to school up there and we would live there..until we saw how much more tuition is for an international student. So that is why I'm going there. I have high hopes to move back to Canada after he is graduated..but I know we will go to wherever he gets a good job. I love Canada though...& will definitely be back someday!

Would be back in a flash, but its probably never going to happen. Just very fortunate to have an understanding wife who allows me to go back often!! 3 weeks to Sask. lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I've lived on the outskirts of Boston my whole life, it's the fast paced city life that I really don't like. People are always so stressed and moving so quickly, there's hardly anytime to enjoy what's around you. But the money is good. It's a double edged sword in a lot of ways.

My wife is from Windsor, just on the other side of the Detroit river so I know the area a bit where you went to college. It's nice there, but still a little too much city for me. We are planning on moving a little further away from Boston within the next year or two but will still have the commute to work. The peace and quiet will be worth it though.

that was our original plan too. U of A charges almost 20k per TERM for an international student though. My local college was 17k per year. Still crazy. Then hubs got his dream job. So here I am in Colorado. -24C this morning. Feels a bit like Alberta. Lol! Edited by NLR

This is a tough question for me. I loooooove Canada, and am from Vancouver so it is really beautiful.... but home number two is in SoCal, which is also very beautiful. I think both countries have their pros and cons of course, but I do love that in SoCal we can buy a way bigger home than the one we have in Vancouver. I guess my dream would be splitting my time between both. When I'm in SD I miss the rain, and when I'm in Vancouver I miss the sun. lol

I will have the same job in both countries, the same company, same position and same pay.

Yes not a place you really want to live at all. My brother used to live in Rhode Island and I always loved taking the bus up to Boston for the day. I'm a big city person, just not a cold person, so I hate snow and winter time so I need to just find a place more my temps.

Even if Canada had those types of temps, I still would never want to move back. Everyone told me I'd change my mind (as a kid I had wanted to live in the US) once I did move here and, nope, been about 16 or 17 years now and my opinion has never changed.

Plus I have always found Americans to be a lot more fun and nicer when you get to know them. Canadian I have always felt reserved and critical of everything and I just always enjoyed my American friends a lot more when I lived in Canada...

I think it all depends who are around you and where you live. Growing up in the Prairies, slower pace of life and people are much friendlier on the most part--that prob goes for both countries! Knew a Toronto guy in DC and he was the biggest jerk I knew, lol Love Rhode Island, will be spending a few months there this Spring/Summer

Thanks guys! I am weighing my options. We talk about going to Canada all the time as in our fields, we have good options in both countries.

Thanks for the insight.

Interesting... and I see that you like the desert. Have you considered Arizona or New Mexico? Cost of living is cheap in either place. The climate is fantastic in Arizona.

I liked not having to pay anything for medical insurance in Alberta. You could get extra coverage, and it doesn't cover dental or vision, but I had a c-section and my tubes tied without it costing a penny. My ex-FIL had cancer and was able to receive a lot of treatment quickly. But Alberta is a rich province compared to the others. What you could buy a house for in town in Alberta would buy you a huge farm in Saskatchewan. Or would get you a little bitty condo in Vancouver (which is one of the most expensive places to live.)

Well I live next to New Mexico and would never move there to the Land of Entrapment ha ha. I love Arizona, but the cost of living is the same as it is here meaning I wouldn't be able to afford the things I want now (with the same job and same salary rule). Otherwise I would move there (not New Mexico though)...
