UK Passport Question

I am just starting a new job (to save a few quid before I head back) and I am working for Her Majesty's Passport Office. During training, we were told that everytime a new passport is issued, you get a new passport number.

If I wanted to renew my passport, is there anything I should be contacting the embassy with? Or should I just turn up with new passport?

Turn up with a new passport and when they say "Why is the number different?" tell them you got a new one. Take the old if you have any still valid visas they would need to cancel/mark out.

I renewed my passport during the time it took for my K1 visa to be processed, so had a different passport number when it came to the London embassy stage. It was never brought up. Also, you need to have at least 6 months validity left on your UK passport when you go for the interview. Theoretically, that should be six months validity beyond the date you are intending to travel to the US. It can be renewed any time after 9 months is left on the passport and that will be added to your new passport (although, you will obviously know that now, working for the Passport Office!)
