Another option for calling to Canada (cause lets face it, I'm sure I'm not the only one with relatives who don't have the computers/google talk/fancy apps...heck my parents don't even have a cellphone! Let alone the grandparents!)

Prepaid long distance cards. I used to do this with Jesse (though beware, this was years ago we did this but I think he got dinged for long distance even receiving! Check with your carrier - he uses AT&T) but it would certainly work for calling back to Canada. Dial the usually toll free number on the card, enter your code, call Canada and if it comes off your phone it comes off as domestic minutes not international. Just check when you buy the card which one works best. Some have low rates but connection fees per call - so if you go on hour long gab feats that would work but if it's a quick hi still alive bye kind of conversation that makes less sense.

Anyway. Just putting that out there.

I ended up going with Ting Mobile. It seemed the cheapest. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Amazon & just activated it with Ting. Any other carrier that has free calling to Canada costs like $60+ a month and I don't use my phone enough to pay that! I will probably do like pro_star said, just purchase long distance cards and then I won't be charged long distance minutes.

I have a LG G2 phone with Rogers right now, if I unlock it can I use it with Verizon or AT&T?

My husband told me Verizon or AT&T will charge me extra because I have no previous "phone credit" in the US. Is this true?

I'm not completely sure, I know with mine I ended up just leaving it and getting a new one, I had a Galaxy S2 with Koodo. It was all too complicated for me to bother bringing it over so I just got a new one. You could try it though!

Yes if you unlock it and it uses a sim card you won't have any issues using it in the USA.

No idea if they will charge you extra. I used a pay as you go plan (straight talk) until my husband's plan expired, then we both got new phones on verizon. But because i didn't have any credit in the USA yet, (been working 2 months) they wouldn't give me a phone plan on my own. I needed him to do it.

I signed up for a credit card through RBC right quick after that. So annoying! I've never been denied anything like that before. Target even denied me a check card before I had my CO driver's license. /sigh

Thank you! Yah, he is right I guess, in that they won't let me sign up for a phone right away because I have no previous credit. That sucks. I guess I will have to start out with Pay as you Go.

My daughter switched to Virgin Mobile USA - if you're in their coverage area (I believe they're part of AT&T as well or T Mobile) you cannot beat their plans - $55 +tax per month for unlimited everything - text, data and voice. You can go with $35 or $45 also depending on your voice needs. You pay for the phones outright of course. They offer the latest Apple phones and relatively recent Androids up to the SIII.

I just got virgin mobile. I am paying $35, unlimited text and data and 300 talk minutes. I got an awesome phone for $80.. the lg optimus f3

We use Virgin Mobile too. It'll save you at least $500 per year (if not more).

As long as Sprint has decent coverage in your area, this is the only real choice.

Every other company is out to make your life miserable (Verizon, AT&T, etc).

Never ever heard the phrase "phone credit". Not likely true.

LOL yah I didn't really know how to describe it.. by "phone credit" I meant just credit. If I have no credit in the US, as I just moved there, they are unlikely to give me a phone.

My hubby is in Massachusetts and uses Boost mobile. 4glte Unlimited data, unlimited calling in the USA, unlimited free texts to Canada, and for an extra $5.00 a month he has unlimited calling to Canada. For a total of $55.00 a month. They have shrinking payments so he only pays $45.00 a month now. Pay as you go. No contracts. Have to purchase phone.

All I can say is I couldnt; believe how much I paid for my monthly cell in Canada in comparison to the US. I was chatting with my brother this weekend and he pays a fortune with very limited data in ON...we pay for 4 phones, unlimited texts, calling and unlimited data for 2 of the 4 and its $160 with Verizon....we are holding on to that unlimited data plan until they kick us out!

Just to ad my Input to cellphone plans, the best I have found and we use is T-Mobile

T-Mobile also allows you to use your Cellphone Worldwide texting and data and free, data is only 2g enough for emails but like my fiance coming to Canada she wont have to worry about charges, and additional lines on T-Mobile are like half the price so I think for me her and her son its 70+30+10 or 20 something like that way cheaper then verizon/att

Now in San Diego signal is funny but we are around lots of hills and out of the downtown area

Vancouver Canada to San Diego [Rancho Bernardo to be exact]

We have boost. They don't have the best nationwide coverage, but the $60 a month for a smart phone with Unlimited Data, Calling and Calling/Texting to Canada it's really hard to even consider going to any other company.

Of course them knocking $5 off for every 6 months of on time payments up to $15 off a month helps too.
