Hello All, and Merry Christmas,

We are trying to make travel plans and estimating the time needed between flights. Have you or someone you know passed through immigration in JFK? How long should we allow for that so that my fiance can catch his next flight?

Thanks!

Zuki

Time to pass any POE depends on how many concurrent flights have landed at or about the same time. If you are first in then it should be fairly quick. A mid afternoon arrival can see the facility get very busy. I arrived at JFK at 3PM in the afternoon and so did about 6 other flights. It took 2+ hours for me to clear and I am a USC.

YMMV

Through Emirates about 15 mins after getting to the immigration post. I am USC.

Through PIA about 1/2 hr

But the big issue is the luggage. It takes average of 45 mins. Plus most connecting flights dont leave from the international terminal. If you are using Continental or American, its a long walk / train. So I would look at a connecting flight atleast 3.5 hrs ahead. You have to bear in mind that the connecting carier will not accept checked baggage if you have less than 1/2 hr before flight

Most folks say, if possible, to book 4-5 hrs b/t flights when going thru immigration. It often doesn't take that long, but if there's a delay of any sort (flight arriving late, lines at Immigration, problems w/ immigration, etc) you'll want that cushion of time. Said miraculously made it thru Dulles in abt 15-20 min - but that was thanks to some family connections arranging an immigration officer to meet him at the plane - his flight was 1 1/2 hrs late and his next flight was scheduled for takeoff 45 min after he arrived.

If it is the carrier's fault (late flight) they are responsible for getting you on the next possible flight and providing hotel if necessary. Good luck!

It took my husband about 3 hours to go through POE at JFK. It seemed that everyone else on the flight came out about 45 minutes to an hour after the flight landed, but they took my husband aside to question him. I'm not sure if what he went through is standard for K1ers or not.

He wasn't connecting, since I picked him up there.

Keep in mind, Royal Air Moroc is notorious for taking off late. Of my 3 flights with them 2 were delayed an hour. My husbands was also delayed an hour.

I planned on a 5 hour layover in NY, and that was ample time. His flight however was delayed an additional 4 hours due to fog, so he was in NY a looooong time.

We lucked out. Flew into JFK on a Monday and arrived around 3pm. We asked which line he should go through at passport control and they directed us to the USC line. There was no line!!! The CBP agent gave me his files to take with him into the next room to the right of passport control. Once inside, I thought we'd be there for hours because there were others inside, including flight personnel. All in all, it took 20 mins. and we had to wait for our luggage afterwards for another 10 mins. However, I've heard it can take a while so I'd give yourself at least 4hrs to a connecting flight, if possible.
