Hello all, I'm a new member who is in the process of obtaining a K1 visa for my british fiancé. I'm working on the petition now and that's no problem, but I do have a question about the visa application fee. I understand that I must send payment for the petition fee when i actually send out the petition, but for the visa application (as in, the stuff my fiancé, James, would have to do on his end in London), when would he have to pay that fee? Would he pay it once the petition is approved, or at the interview, or at some other time?

I'm seriously confused and tried looking everywhere for info, but I might have missed some (it's 8 AM here and I've been up since 2:30 AM) things. (Also, I apologize for any spelling or grammar mistakes; my cat decided that my laptop was the best place to be while I tried to type this post.

2011: James and I met via a blogging website, became friends due to having the same favorite band.

02/2013: James is, at this point, my best friend (and I joked about him being in love with me...welp, I was right!heart.gif), and I realized I was in love with him as much as he was in love with me. We discussed that we both wished we could be together, but I was committed to my then-girlfriend.

06/2013: Ex-girlfriend and I broke up. I ask James to be my boyfriend two days after the breakup (06/24/2013), and we were officially a couple (finally!).

09/2013: James comes to the US to visit me and stays with me at my apartment from mid/late September to late October. We mutually proposed while he was in the US.

10/2013: We weigh our options (me moving to London, him moving to Des Moines), and decide that him moving to the US would be the best way to go.

11/2013-12/2013: I begin to seriously research the process. James and I agree we will officially get married in DSM in front of a judge, and save up for an unofficial ceremony and reception in Pittsburgh (where my parents live) a few years down the road. Which leads us to....

K1 Process timeline:

1/4/14: began gathering all documents and forms, all letters and statements typed and ready to print. Just waiting on the form/letter/photo/etc. from James (the fiancé) and the money for the fee!

Hey!

The next part is paid before going to the interview - he will have to take the receipt with him! When you get near to that stage, he will have to go online to decide whether he wants to pick up the visa or have it sent to him. It's at that point he pays the fee!!

Just making sure I understand you correctly--so he would pay the fee after the petition is approved and forwarded, but before the interview and (presumably) the medical? He would pay the fee when he actually goes online to do the application? Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm just a bit lost and I don't want a silly mistake costing time and stuff (I would like to get James (the fiancé) to the US by this winter/the end of this year) headbonk.gif

You pay at the beginning of each step. 129 = pay, K-1 = pay, AOS = pay.

You get the idea.

Gotcha, that makes perfect sense. Thanks so much for the help! :)

Sorry, I gave you a poor answer. In your original post I thought you were asking broadly when fees are paid. Now I see You are looking specifically for how to pay the K-1 fee in London.

He will pay before the interview.

Once you send of the initial petition (which you pay for at the time of sending) you will get a NOA. After that it will be sent to the NVC and you will wait for the NOA2 from them. Some get this quickly and others don't - we waited 5 months. After that, your fiancé will receive a letter from the embassy in London telling him the next steps. This has changed since I did it, but from what I gather it's all done with online forms and is far simpler. At this time he will need to send off for a police certificate as he will need this to take to the medical. The cost for this is £45 for standard delivery. He will need to arrange to medical and at that he will pay £235. He should then receive the appointment letter from the embassy and I assume this tells him where he needs to go to pay the next fee (I say assume as I never got the letter and just had to figure it out. Luckily it's straight forward!). He will then take the receipt with him to the interview.

You then don't have to pay anything in regards to the actual visa until you apply for AOS and this is $1070, so it's a good idea to forward plan for that too so you guys don't get stressed with it when the time comes to pay it!

You might be my favorite person on earth right now--I was just about to question the AOS fee (I thought it was waived for some reason...dont know why I thought that!)

I haven't sent in the petition yet (although most of my documents are ready to go, except James's letter of intent, bio form, passport photo, I still need the money for the fee), but I've already told James about the police certificate and he is working on getting that now. Thank you so much! <3

Also, there is one (semi related) question I have about the process. I know that James will need a copy of his own birth certificate and the original for his interview, but I've seen it implied that he would need the original and copy of my birth certificate as well. Is that the case, or does my fiancé only need HIS birth cert for the interview?

The interview in London is all about him. His birth certificate. The only thing he takes of yours to his interview is your affidavit of support and proof of your income. List of documents for him http://london.usembassy.gov/application_documents.html (scroll down past the first couple of paragraphs)

You birth certificate (photocopy) goes with the petition to prove you are a US Citizen. It will be in the file that eventually ends up in London, but not really a part of his visa interview.

You're more than welcome! Yeah, I figured I would say about the AOS fee as I had no idea about it at first, and it wasn't ill after I told me fiancé a breakdown of what everything was going to cost that I saw that - least to say it was not a welcome surprise, lol!

As for the birth certificate, he only needs his, not yours. I would advise him to take 2 or 3 copies of everything he needs to take as the embassy can charge for any copies that they make on his behalf, so it's better to have more than you need than less and have to foot the bill for it!
