Hello,

I am beginning to do the paperwork for my wife but she has a son(my son in law, age 26). Should I do his paperwork at the same time? or wait until my wife's paperwork is completed? Or more over can I even do it the same time?

I am US citizen and she is French we live in Canada.

How long does it take to get a green card anyway?

thx

james

Your wife's son is your stepson; he's not your son-in-law.

If your stepson was under age 18 when you married his mom, then you can petition for him. It would be an F1 family preference case and it will take 6-7 years for a visa.

If your stepson was 18 or older when you married mom, then you cannot petition for him.

Your wife when she becomes an LPR can file for her son. It would be an F2b family preference case and take about 7-8 years for a visa.

Once he has an immigration visa, he would get his green card when he gets to the US.

You can file for both of them at the same time if you qualify to petition for your stepson.

It will be 5-8 years for a green card.

If you are living in Canada, why does your wife need a US green card?
