Food shopping is definitely more expensive in different places here in the US. BUT, we are spending HALF of what we spent in the UK on our food here, so a big savings for us. We live in NH so I'm sure places are more expensive in other states.

Hugely important question... do import places sell Heinz tinned ravioli? I've seen imported baked beans and spaghetti hoops but not ravioli.

Don't judge me but I love the stuff haha.

I was happy to find Marmite over there.

I was not happy that none of my US family liked it. Sigh. Still, all the more for me!

Reading this thread made me think of all the things I'm going to miss - The chippy, for one and Indian takeaway definitely. I've not found a single place in KC that does that. We've had "fish and chips", but store-bought, so I'm going to have to learn to cook while I wait to be able to work!! My fiancee can cook pretty well, but I'm useless at it, so I'm making this a project now :D

I will also miss the proper BBC. BBC with adverts just feels wrong! Oh, and by extension, David Attenborough. I know the Discovery Channel changes the voiceovers on his documentaries to other people, and that's a crime if you ask me... Not that I can't get them from iPlayer of course, it's just more difficult.

Hi, Scotty. I'm just up the road from you in St Jo, and I can confirm that you've got no chance of decent curry/a chippie in these parts! But can I make a suggestion? Try not to focus on what's not here from home - rather embrace what IS here that's not at home. Foodwise, in particular, you are in the BBQ capital of America - and it's phenomenal. Have you been to Jack's Stack in Overland Park yet? If so, you really need to get down there. And inhale a huge plate of Kansas City burnt ends. Mind-blowing. ;-)

Oh no Damian, absolutely, I agree. I have no complaints at all and I'm looking forward to my new cuisine in BBQ Country, I just know where the first place I'll be going whenever I go back to Blighty will be!! ;)

We've tried on two occasions to go to Oklahoma Joe's; the queue out of the door is very off putting when you're hungry but I'm determined to get in there one day! I've heard nothing but the highest of praise for it.

Missing things from home is infinitely better than being at home and missing America yes.gif A whole new list of things to enjoy that I can't wait for. But damn it if I won't crave a fishcake butty on occasion, my friend ;)

Jack's Stack (the Overland Park one - the KC one is only so so even though it's the same ownership) > Oklahoma Joe's. Trust me on this. It's just that OJ's was on Man Vs Food and so has been uber-hyped as a result. Don't get me wrong, it's great 'Que, but Jack's Stack is better.

And of course you're perfectly entitled to crave a fishcake butty (can I assume you are from North of the Watford Gap in yearning for such a "delicacy?") wink.png

Way north sir, been in Sheffield since I started high school but my family are from here since, as my Sheffielder boss would put it, "since God were a lad".

Will have to give it a try, for sure! I'm not over there until the end of the month, so will plan accordingly!

Interesting - my second (and indeed current) wife is also from Sheffield, where she resides as we speak whilst the F2A application I've filed on her behalf takes its course. She lives in Dore, and works part-time in a pub in Gleadless. Small world, eh?

I was just saying this to another VJ member the other day, also from Sheffield, whose final timeline, interview etc, almost mirrored mine. It's really odd how these things crop up. Nice part of the City is Dore, too.

It's odd that this city has been my home for nearly 20 years now, yet soon I'll be half the world away starting life over again. Sobering - but genuinely can't wait. I think that's what caused my "melancholia" for fish and chips and curry before I've even left the UK!!

Which part of the city do you live in? I'm having a concurrent conversation with her via email!!!!!!!!!

It is a requirement that anyone who visits brings Marmite. No marmite , yer no staying....

BBC is no problem (well apart from my other half who watches East Enders) - you just need to sign up for a <cough>VPN service<cough> and use that before switching to the BBC website. Makes living here so much more civilised. A quick Google search will find you any number of ways to watch the BBC.....

As far as Indian Takeaways/Restaurants go, there are thankfully 2 in North Providence/Pawtucket which have them (and one of them I went to on Sunday, was much like back in England). Fish and Chips though.. that's a different matter. There's one locally which I haven't been to yet but I might try and convince Amy to take me there one day.

Then again.. Rhode Island is known for seafood, so it probably isn't too hard to find them. Question is whether they're a proper chippy or not.

Something I do miss, though. And that's proper chocolate. None of this Hershey's heresy, or the stuff they claim is Dairy Milk.

"What's yours is mine!"

Wheatley, I'm with you on the chocolate thing. When I get to the US I think I'm gonna lose a lot of weight as I just don't like any of the US sweets/chocolate etc :P I HAVE noticed some Cadburys products like Flakes in Indian convenience stores with Indian writing over them and they taste the same as the British stuff. Think I mentioned this a few pages ago too but my fiancé works at an Irish butcher/café/shop type place which sometimes gets in the good (PROPER) Cadburys! Might be worth trying to hunt down somewhere like that over in RI.

Fish and chips...oh I'm gonna miss that so much. I was expecting good things from Boston but have been sorely disappointed every time I've tried it in a restaurant over there. Really hard, crusty batter and slightly off, unfresh-tasting (probably frozen) fish seem to be the staple...give me fresh, tender cod with crispy batter every time!

For the next 26 days, Chapeltown! It's seems like there's an exodus from the steel city lately!
