I waas just approved for my K-1 visa!! And I know that they keep your passport to put the visa in, but do they also keep your birth certificate? Cause I didn't get mine back from them, is it in the mail with the passport and visa? Can someone please let me know and put my mind at ease. Thank you

Do you mean the consulate has it or the uscis? If it does not arrive with your visa I sufgest contacting the consulate and requesting it back.

It does not arrive with your visa it stays with them ... just order up a new one - much easier anyways.

You get your visa and a package that is marked "Do Not Open" that you are going turn in at your POE. Your birth certificate could very well be in that package, and you might be able to get POE to photocopy it and return the original. But like others have said, just order a certified copy of it. We had to order a long form copy anyway, so the original was never even used.

Just order another one--the one you gave them was not a true original, as the true original stays back with the govt!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ok thanks all, the thing is they asked for a photocopy and the original and kept both. I don't see why they had to if they have my passport. But oh well sounds like its easy to get another one.

I agree actually... vs what I said earlier, if it's not in the open with your passport, then just order a new one. I even ordered a BC long form online from Alberta, paid extra for shipping and had it in 3 days. LOL But you probably have a bit more time than that. I needed to get it for my passport in 2012.
