She failed the "understanding" part of the test!

My grandmother had her test about a week or so ago and passed the reading, writing, and civics with flying colors.

But I guess that as soon as she said down and the officer asked her to raise her right hand, she said she didn't understand and raised both! and that was the end of that!

The IO called me from the waiting room and said she had failed but would continue with the civics part, but she would need to come back again because she didn't understand.

Throughout the rest of the exam she asked questions and my grandmother was able to respond fine, yes, with an accent, and a little slow, but she answered!

The interview itself is part of the test. During the conversation the IO is assessing the applicants understanding of the English language. There is a great video on Youtube from USCIS that simulates the interview process. Have your grandmother watch it. Also, they will ask her all the questions she answered on the N-400 so make sure you study it and the answers she gave so she doesn't get tripped up. Good luck!

Did they give her a piece of paper at the end and if so, what did it say?

Just the fact that she tried and that she passed the civic tests, kudos to your granny!!!
