Bringing belongings to the US

So we are thinking that after the interview is over, David with drive my stuff back down to the US and I will fly into JFK. If this happens, what will he need to cross the border as my 'agent'? I am assuming that he will need a copy of the visa and of course the comprehensive list of what is being brought over. I just don't want him to have a hard time corssing back or to be asked to pay duty.

There was a post a few months back about someone parents' taking their stuff down for them but for the life of me I cannot find it now.... of course :)

May 6 - Received an email response saying things were progressing normally but that waiting times might be longer

2014

Feb 25, 26 & 28 - got emails saying that the cases had been transferred to another office, then to my local office, and then just transferred and are being processed

Mar 17 - got email, attached to one case number only, saying that my A number was changed relating to the I-130 filing

Mar 20 - N-400 receipt date for my father
2021
Apr 21 - Biometrics appt.

May 2 - Interview

We employed official movers. We provided them with the itemized list of boxes, a copy of the visa and passport pages, then once I had crossed the border, faxed them back a copy of the stamped visa and both sides of the I-94 - which they were required to show at the border to prove I had the right to import these items as personal belongings and thus exempt from duty. You also might want to provide him with a letter officially authorizing him to act on your behalf. I don't know if it would be needed but it wouldn't hurt.

If I recall correctly you -must- cross the border at the same time or ahead of your belongings.

I'm using movers; they will be leaving a couple of days after me, after I've faxed them a copy of my stamped visa and I-94.

He wouldn't be allowed to bring your belongings across the border until you yourself had crossed the border. He needs proof that you have been legally admitted before they will allow your belongings to enter - at least duty free. You may want to rethink some of the scheduling, if you can. It is a nuisance, I know, because I had to arrange for a friend to meet the movers after we had left since I needed to use what was being packed right up until the time we left and couldn't have them come in earlier. Good luck.

You'll have to give him CBP Form 3299 and a copy of your I-94 for him to be able to cross over with your belongings duty free...

Monique, if you live near the border, you can drive down to it and activate your visa, if the visa allows multiple entries. This way your fiance/husband will have a copy of your activated visa.

After my interview in Montreal, I drove to Cornwall and activated it there since its pretty much on the way back to Gatineau/Ottawa. That saved me time when I flew out to Colorado when crossing customs.

The other thing I had done, was drive south of Ottawa, crossed the border with my mom and shipped my stuff from the Ogdensburg NY. Saved me hundreds of dollars in shipping since it was National at this point and not international shipping from Canada.
