One letter missing from last name on 10-year Green Card

After waiting so long for my wife's ROC approval (which, except for the strangely long period of time from application to biometrics, went fairly well), I just now noticed a small problem. My wife's new GC has her last name misspelled. She's from Spain, where everyone has two last names: the first is the father's and the second is the mother's. She's taken my last name as her second last name her in the States (her name in Spain remains the same, regardless of her marital status). So she went from being (for example) Sara Maria Lopez Ortega to being Sara Maria Lopez Hernandez. Well, her 2-year GC had her new name right, but her 10-year one says (again, for example), Sara Maria Lopez Hernande -- that is, it's missing the last letter of her second last name. Is it worth it/necessary to get this corrected, especially since we'll be going for her citizenship soon? any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

AJ

I think they ran in to the name length limitation - may not be a big deal. Never the less, call them and point out the difference and seek help/ guidance.

But then how they didn't run out of it when they were issuing her 2 year conditional green card? There it was fine!!! Anyway, I would notify because the last thing you need is complications later on how her green card does not match with her social security, did she stole someone's identity etc. I would just have that fixed. I know it's a pain, but so many things run under our names, bank card, driver's license, social security card, and if she is applying later on for citizenship then that too. So I would have it fixed.

Good luck!

That explains that they didn't run out of name space but it was a typo mistake on them. Yes, it is good to get things straight to avoid any later complications. Good luck and all the best.

Hello caeremonarius,

How did you finally deal with the error ( missing last letter in last name )? Did you have to submit another I-90 to make the correction.

I am in a similar plight as yours. My spouse has a long last name (XXXX YYYY) with total 28 chars. When my spouse's initial green card came in, full name was there in the green card, but they incorrectly issued a 2 year GC with CR1 instead of IR1.

We filed an I-90 to correct the error and received the new 10 year green card after almost 9 months of waiting. The new card is missing last letter of the last name. I-797 notice, biometrics notice as well as the letter along with the green card all have full name without any missing letter. Computer and human readable signature at the bottom of the card (back) also has the full last name.

I am confused as to whether this was a system limitation on the number or characters or a USCIS error. Hard to believe that the 2 year card did not encounter that limitation and the 10 year card hit ( maybe a change in process?)

Any insights and guidance will be appreciated.
