Severence Pay

Government jobs may not seem attractive at first, until you factor in pensions, severance, and everything else a union will get for you.

My boss (another writer) was telling me about a laborer who worked on sets in the California film industry, doing manual tasks. This union laborer is now 52, retiring, moving to France, and starting his own vineyard. (!) None of the writers still have those sexy Hollywood jobs. My boss is now living in New Jersey, writing cr*p, and is unprotected by a union.

As I was reading another post, a vj'r mentioned that they received severence pay.

I was wondering how serverence pay works ... is it optional or mandatory?

Well my boss called it serverence pay but it was basically a thank you for all of the work I did for him over the past 16 years ... There was no contract and he didn't have to do what he did ... And I am pretty sure that you wouldn't typically receive serverence pay if you quit/resign from your job ...

that's what my boss called it too, a huge thank you. i was incredibly lucky and received 1yrs salary (i must have looked like a large mouth bass when he told me, i was speechless!) bossman said he didn't like odd numbers so considers me working for him for 18yrs instead of 17.

I was in the Cdn Forces. Broke my contract, got return of contributions back and severence pay. Can't recall what the severance pay was, think it was 1 week or 2 weeks for every yr of completed service
