Required Vaccinations (Montreal - 2013)

Hi again,

I know some older information on this topic is on the forums, but since this has been revised as of August 2013 I thought it'd be wise to double check with anyone here.

According to the link above, the following immunizations are required:

- Diphtheria toxoids
- Haemophilus Influenza Type B (Hib)
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Influenza
- Measles
- Meningococcal
- Mumps
- Pertussis
- Pneumococcal
- Polio
- Rotavirus
- Rubella
- Tetanus
- Varicella (Chicken Pox)

I went and got my Influenza shot, as well as my 1st dose of Varicella this week, and have to get my 2nd in 6 weeks time (apparently if you have the chicken pox before you turn 1 years old you're still not immune). The nurse told me that I don't need to get Pneumococcal or Rotavirus since these are considered "children viruses", and I shouldn't need them. But now that I'm home, I'm unsure if that's going to be enough to justify it to the panel physician who'll be doing my medical.

Do I really need Pneumococcal or Rotavirus if I'm 24 years old?

According to one of the panel physicians, these are the only required vaccinations for ages 18-64, but I'm not sure if this is considered out-of-date information.

We followed what was listed on the Panel Physicians site and were fine! My husband had his medical earlier this month and everything was correct, and there were no issues at our interview or anything.

19-26 YEARS

Tdap (Adacel or Boosterix) - ensure you get Tdap not just Td

MMR Measles, Mumps, Rubella. ("MR" and "MM" are not enough). You need MMR

Varicella - If you had "Chicken Pox" disease, no vaccine is needed

Influenza (only required during October - February, annually)

You really are only required to show proof of immunity to those 4 and influenza is seasonal.

If you are missing any of these, should they be done ahead of time before the medical, or will they give the shots at the medical if needed?

My son had chicken pox at 8 mos old, we just told them and they wrote it down and never required him to get the vaccine. Your nurse should not have given you the vaccine without actually doing the titres test to check immunity. That is an outdated way of thinking.

I have heard verbal confirmation is fine for the chicken pox, but then on Dr. Zatsman website it says that Varicella vaccine is necessary?

They may require you to have the titre test to show immunity. It's generally a free blood test you can get your doctor to ask for. I had my doctor test me for everything and he was pretty easy going about it all. Then I went to the health unit and got the vaccines I needed.

If you don't have the vaccination for something I suggest going to the health unit or clinic to get it done where it will be cheap or free vs the panel physician.

Did anybody answer this question? My medical is in a few days and I'm missing a shot. Can I just get it when I'm there? (yes I heard it's more expensive but at this point I don't care)

That makes absolutely no sense and it sounds like your doctor is just trying to get out of giving you shots :S

It is not considered fraud whatsoever. The price for the medical depends on where you go and what shots you need.

I'm in Toronto so I called Dr. Randall Lee and they said that it is $300 and they don't give shots they only order the reports. So regardless what shots I get before the price is still the same, which seems weird to me. Yes, my doctor is quite the B! But this is what she told me. I found it super strange seeing as though in Canada these are shots we are required to get anyway.

Yah I just looked at another doctors website in Ontario and they don't give the shots either. http://www.health1stmedical.ca/#

They want to see proof before the medical that you have all the required shots. So if your doctor refuses to give you any shots I would suggest going to another clinic.
