A couple of quick questions

Just wanted to ask a couple of questions - when me and my fiance enter the US on my K1, is he allowed to wait and go through in my line with me? (My fiance is the US citizen). He wanted to wait and come through with me while they sort my paperwork out and to help answer any questions, as he's worried if they need him for anything then he won't know what to do.

Also, a question about CBP - I have a pack of teeth whitening gels as I had mine whitened back in June, and I need 'em to keep it topped up for a couple of years. They're in a bag that shows it's whitening and they look a bit like syringes but with no needle on the end, and they say "white dental beauty" on the side of each one. I've seen some people say online they've been fine with tooth whitening product, but I'm just a bit concerned about going through the US border with something containing peroxide in containers that resemble syringes.

He would be allowed to go through the line with you, alternatively you might be allowed to go through the US Citizen line as you have a US Citizen with you and all. Some of the POE reviews have done this with no issue. I also don't think there will be an issue with him coming into Secondary with you to do the paperwork but if you get an arsey CBP officer they might tell him not to speak unless spoken to. Best bet is to read the POE reviews for where you're flying to and see what's what.

On the topic of the gels - it shouldn't be an issue because it seems from what you're saying they're marked up properly. But if you want complete peace of mind you might want to get a letter from the Dentist/Dental Hygienist saying what they are and what they're for.

If it's in carry on, it needs to be in the ziplock bag like all liquids and gels. It will be visible and screened before boarding. If it's in checked luggage, then it may or may not be screened. It's not routine to go through your luggage. As long as it's a labeled product, then it shouldn't be a problem. Teeth whitening products are common and shouldn't be a mystery to even CBP.

I got sent to secondary luggage screening once arriving in the US. The guy took a bottle out and said "what kind of medicine is this?" I turned it over in his hand to show the label and said "shampoo". Funny!

Hahah! Similar experience for me when I came back from Brasil and they were going through my bags. I scratched my head with my right hand and I guess my hand lingered there for a second and he said GET OFF YOUR PHONE IMMEDIATLY PHONES ARENT ALLOWED IN HERE I said Im just scratching my head.

He said oh, thats ok then

Reminds me of the time I got stopped at security at.. I think it was Providence actually. My seatbelt extender was in my carry-on (of course) and one of the TSA officers yelled. "WHOSE BAG IS THIS!?". I put my hand up a little and just said it was mine, came forward and was told to keep my hands where he could see them as he searched my bag. When he found the "offending" article he sent it through the X-Ray to be scanned separately. For some reason they seemed to think it was an offensive weapon...

"What's yours is mine!"

I think I was picked for bag search to prove a point that they did not do racial profiling because Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was there to observe. So Ken and Barbie just in from their honeymoon in Mexico, me the older white lady, and so on were screened. How cool to have a member of Congress looking into your bag as they pull things out.

It was a bizarre day. A plot to blow up planes from London to the US (August 2006) was uncovered so all flights were cancelled. I managed to get re-booked on one of the first planes out of London a couple of days later. We could take nothing on the plane --no handbag, nothing bought in the airport, no books, snacks, etc. We were allowed a small ziplock bag to hold cash and credit cards. Before boarding, airline personnel had to inspect our shoes thoroughly inside and out. Stinky job. Haha! As soon as we took off they started doing landing cards because several hundred people had to take turns using the two pens they had on board. So that's why the Congresswoman was at the airport to meet our plane specifically. I guess she was checking out security or just wanted to make the evening news for publicity. We had to line up and wait for the plane to empty, then go in two single file lines like school kids to the immigration hall with Ms. Lee and security patrolling the line. It was a very long day.

That plot is what started the stricter rules about liquid on board.

I just entered on Saturday via Houston with my USC fiancé. We asked and were directed through the USC line so we stayed together throughout the whole entry process including secondary processing. It was all very smooth.

I'd pack those teeth whitening gels in checked luggage.

Note sure I'd want to mention hydrogen peroxide to someone security checking . I think I'd stick it in checked baggage too.

Just to add, I would pack it somewhere vaguely accessible in your checked luggage, so that if they do see it and think it looks suspicious and decide to open your suitcase to see, they won't have to dig deep through everything to get to it. (When I got home the last time I flew into the US, I realised they had checked in my suitcase....the Marmite jar must have looked suspicious haha!)
