We got one from walmart I'm sure around $30 or less. It has self shut off and she has been using it for 3+ years and loves it. No problems. Spending $100's of dollars is kind of a waste to me but if you want a luxury rice cooker I guess they have them. My wife looked at a $200 pair of jeans once and we both looked at each other like what kind of person would pay that for jeans.. lol

Oh, it's a face thing, to be certain. Saves embarrassment(sp?) when having a cooking party with her homies.

Usually, her peeps would tell her which one to get, to save some face.

Might not be an issue, with yer lass, if'n she not have her peeps come over or they don't participate in the 'face' game.

This is cultural, as well, for some chinese, MOST Koreans, all Japanese, but I am uncertain if'n these high dolla cookers are even sold in the PI, so it's possible yer lass not know of the multi-function, programmable, computer controlled cookers. It's also possible her peeps not know of it, either, so that's a plus - no peer pressure to buy something ya not need. (IMO)

[snickering] - I 'get by' with a 12 dolla unit from CVS, almost 5 years now [made in China] . Great for one person, easy to make congee also. However, we have a shopping weekend scheduled, so I've no idea what model will make it home. I know all the models, just not certain which one she'll choose.

The more expensive ones are iH, or induction heat. Heat is distributed across around the whole pot, not just a hot coil on the bottom. It promotes even cooking of the rice from all sides. It is also electronically monitored for temperature so the rice cooks at exactly the righty temp. You can cook from as little as a half cup to the max. IH rice cookers also have settings for porridge and others. On the keep warm setting, the temp is monitored and the lid electronically opened and closed to keep the right amount of moisture so you don't have dry, break-your-tooth pieces hiding in there. I have 3 cup rice cooker that can keep a cup of rice warm for 2 days with no dry rice.

Compared side by side and following Asian prep methods, there is no comparison between heater coil and IH rice cookers.

But then again,it helps to know what good rice is.

I had an expensive rice cooker in singapura, but those were common there.

I rarely Eat rice so it is not an issue

She Bought Wild rice the other day. So I make Wild rice and Chicken

This may be some future problem,

as he's already displayed his fetish for expensive rice cookers and enjoys a type of rice that you'll never want to eat.

We have a Zojirushi rice cooker. Nevermind the multi-functional and programmable features... Surely the cute elephant logo alone is reason enough to buy an almost $100 ('twas on sale) rice cooker?

Admittedly I've never tried making bread in it, but it works nicely even when I try to confuse it by throwing a whole bunch of other ingredients in it to make a one pot meal. We use this thing at least 4 times a week and often times the MIL will also ask us to bring it for rice making when we go there for dinner.

Cuisinart. Asawa Ko picked it coz it coordinates with other kitchen appliances & she had a BBB 20% off coupon. It's digital. It's programmable. It cooks Rice. We eat the Rice. That's all I know about it.

There we have it. Rice is rice is rice. As long we are happy with what we have, makes no difference on the price. That is, until someone like Gordon Ramsay makes a visit!! Lol!!!
