I do not know what they check for, let me make that clear. My statement was only a guess. But honestly that is not a lot of debt, not at all. My guess is, that if they did do some sort of financial background check, they would look for your ability to support your spouse. Income to debt ratio, things like this. See if you have gone bankrupt recently, any international financial concerns or wierd/wack transactions, etc. If you have a solid income, good earnings history, solid job, and reasonable debt ceiling? You should be good to go and pass with flying colors. Honestly if you only owe 2k? smile.png

Personally? I would recommend that you stay on top of your credit rating. Not the free ones. Buy a service every two or three years, from one of the top three firms (i.e Equifax etc) and see what your credit rating is (you can buy one credit service that shows you all three major credit firms). It costs about $35 for a year. Close old accounts (i.e. an old Department Store). Manage your debt (you seem to be on top of that) and your income. If you have a credit score of 600, or 650, or higher? you are good to go. This is my opinion only. My credit varies from 780 to 820 and I think the highest rating is around 850 or 860. That is more just sound financial advice, and none of this is based on any "inside knowledge" or even exterior knowledge of what they are looking for. I am soley basing this on what I have seen from other Federal investigations and background checks.

Closing old accounts may negatively affect credit rating since it changes your debt utilization and reduces your credit history

I have some great news guys. My wife is living in Manila, Philippines and I'm back in the US. We turned in our I-130 on October 23rd and today we got APPROVED. I'm still shocked! I'm wondering if they expedited our petition because of the typhoon? Either way it only took 4 weeks! Someone tell me i'm not seeing things! I got an I-797 Notice of Action today in the mail that said we are approved. I also took a screen shot of our petition from the website.

Yes ours was sent to Vermont. I live just north of Harrisburg Pennsylvania. And 4 weeks ago we just filed. Today it's approved. Totally shocked! They said in the I-797 notice that they are now sending the approved visa petition to Portsmouth NH to the NVC

Congrats. Looks like the Vermont service center is flying right now because they don't have any backlogged. We'll have to get a non-Philipina/o approval though to be sure that that wasn't the cause, but it looks like the lack of any I-130 backlog at Vermont is making the petitions fly through there. Also a great way to show the statistically illiterate higher ups in the government (who of course would never bother to look at the median or average range of approval times) that the "average approval time" is closing in on that vaunted 5-month goal really fast. Of course that's F*cked up that people with children and pregnant wives are being separated while people like me who don't have any children will probably get approved faster BECAUSE of the fact that we applied later, but God Bless the US of A (of course!--in case anyone from the NSA is reading this....).

Congrats McCaw! It doesn't matter how it get approved, or why it got approved, it got approved. I am happy for you.

I had two trips scheduled for Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years to go see my wife. I was going for Thanksgiving, coming back for two weeks, and then going back for three weeks over Christmas and New Years. I work at home most of the time and my boss said "why don't you just stay with your wife until after New Years?" I leave for Bogota this Wednesday and return 6 weeks later. Our first Christmas together and she has already decorated the house! :) I think I spent too much money this weekend; Nordstroms, Michael Kors, Victorias Secret, Macy's are all laughing their way to the bank this morning! rofl.gif
