For those that opted to apply for SSN automatically, how long did it take to acquire the number and/or receive the physical card from POE?

I POE'd on Sept 18 and I checked with the SSN office last Friday but still nothing showing up as being processed. I don't know if this is usual processing time or if it's because of the current govt shutdown.

The SSA is not currently issuing new numbers due to the partial shutdown of the federal government.

i selected that and didnt get a ssn. I went to my local SS building and got it in person (they printed a form with the number on it) actual card arrives a week later.

2/7/13 mailed I130 x 2

2/14/13 checks cashed $420 x 2

4/3/13 RFE more divorce info requested and marriage certificate(which I had already sent)

4/9/13 mailed additional info

4/19/13 I130 approved

5/10/13 NVC received

5/16/13 Called NVC and got Case #s and Invoice ID #s

5/17/13 USCIS website states: Your case can not be found at this time in My Case Status. Please check your receipt number and try again.

5/24/13 Paid AOS ($88.00) fee online

5/30/13 Emailed I-864 package for both kids

6/3/13 paid IV bill $230 x 2 kids

6/5/13 IV bill shows paid, DS260 available

6/14/13 CHILDREN'S PASSPORTS ARRIVED!!!!

6/14/13 filed online DS-260 for both kids

6/16/13 emailed Supporting docs for DS-260 for both kids

7/9/13 CHECKLIST for both kids...sad.png

7/9/13 checklist response sent (birth certs and passport Bio Page <again>)

8/2/13 CHECKLIST both kids

8/3/13 checklist response sent (I-864 AGAIN and paystubs - sent last 6 paystubs)

I know at 1 time, even if u had checked the box for it--majority of time the SSN never arrived. Wait approx 10-14 Business days and then with an already filled out application you obtain from http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ head down to ur local office (along with the required ID)--so when they say, nope ur not in the system---u hand over the already filled out form--And I imagine the Govt shutdown is affecting things right now as well. http://ssa.gov/shutdown/

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

After 3 weeks mine hadn't arrived so I went to an SSA office and had it a week later.

Honestly my driver's license was more trouble because my SAVE db was messed up so I had to go to another office (In Colorado it's the Department of Revenue who runs the DMV) and get them to update the db. They fixed it fairly quickly, and you can get it fixed at a CBP office, but there was a note that apparently needed to be added to my file and a letter to bring before I could even get my driver's. Seriously it ended up taking me like almost 2 months, and all I have is the paper interm license!

I did my POE October 2nd and my SSN card arrived today

07-18-12 - Married
10-26-12 - NOA1 sent
10-29-12 - NOA1 received
03-11-13 - NOA2 approved
04-03-13 - NVC received
04-10-13 - NVC case number assigned
04-19-13 - AOS/IV paid

04-22-13 - AOS/IV cleared

06-07-13 - Case Complete

09-03-13 - Medical

09-25-13 - Interview

10-01-13 - Picked up Visa

10-02-13 - POE Queenston-Lewiston

10-11-13 - SSN arrived
