Hi!
I know there are a million threads about international moving companies for UK>US moves,

but I am at a loss. They are all very old reviews of companies and I am trying desperately to

find a reliable company to move my fiance's belongings. He only has personal effects like

clothes, books, etc and no big furniture. If I missed a current thread, I'd love a link.

Thank you so much!!!

Did you search London forum? http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/99-united-kingdom/

Get admin to move your post there and you may have more answers. I was lucky enough to have my stuff moved together with my fiancés belongings by his company so cannot help you on this one myself.

It is not where I breathe but where I love that I live.

Hello greenteamilk,

I am here to help. I am in the industry.

Here is a company I highly recommend. The good thing about this is they have a COMPANY branch in the UK and COMPANY branches all over the Unites States. Please note I said COMPANY branch and NOT AGENT branch. The difference is a COMPANY branch is owned by the same COMPANY. An AGENT branch is just a informal (non-contractual) agreement between two companies.

Now some pointers for you.

If the total of his goods comes out to 1 cbm or less, it will be cheaper to air freight the goods. I know that is hard to believe, but it is. You see, in ocean freight moves, there are a lot of minumium amounts due. i.e. trucking, warehouse, ocean freight, documentation. With air freight, that does really apply.

Remember air freight goes on diminsional weight (different from actiual weight) let me explain :

you have a two identical boxes with exception to the weights

Box 1 / packed with pillows

L : 36"

W : 32"

H : 24"

weight : 15 lbs

dimensional weight ( (36 x 32 x 24) / 139 = 198 lbs.

Box 2 / packed with books

L : 36"

W : 32"

H : 24"

weight : 275 lbs

box 1 would be rated at 198 lbs while box two would be rated at 275 lbs

It is very important to take dimsions and weight for each box. I cannot stress this enough. Remember, lengh x width x height. Make a spread sheet in excell and enter each and every box. Here are the colomn headers

Box Number / Contents / Lenght / Width / Height / weight

Hope this information helps you out.

If your coming Houston, TX way, Claus in the Houston, TX Shipco office will take care of you. He has been in the industry over 30 years.

The good part about this company is they can do a FULL TURN key service from door UK to door United States. Or you can save your self a lot of money by delivering the cartons / box to the CFS ( container freight station - i.e. receiving warehouse) in the UK and picking up the items at the CFS station in the United States. The CFS stations are listed on shipco's web site where you can collect the goods. I can tell you the major costs are picking up items from your house in UK and delivering items to your house in the U.S. If you can do these two parts yourself, you will save a hugh amount of money.

oh, one other thing. If you have any type of furniture at all. It MUST BE put in a box. They will not accept any type of unpacked furniture. Remember, packing is everything.

I used to quote people like this. I would quote them the packing amount and they would gasp, and then they would reply can't we just get insurance. I would reply back to them if you had to choose the cost of packing vs. the cost of insurance, pay for the packing.

Remember, sentimental items cannot be replaced by insurance but CAN BE SAVED by proper packing. I cannot stress this enough.

The carriers liabilty is limited to $ 500 usd per item. So if you have a box with a value 2500.00 usd, the carrier ( no matter who you use) will only pay out $ 500.00 usd. AND it must be packed correctly by a professional packer.

The only type of cargo insurance you can quailfy for is FPA insurance (ask Shipco) for a rate quote. This type of insurance is for TOTAL LOSS only. Be sure you understand the difference betwween FPA ( free of particular average) and Full Marine Cargo Insurance. In order to quailify for Full Marine Cargo insurance, your items must be packed and shipped from your house by a professional moving company. yeah, I know that sucks. It is because so many people in the past try to recover their moving expensive i.e. $$$$$ by filing FAKE CLAIMS against insurance companies. So Insurance Companies came back with ONLY FPA Policy for self packers.

Does freight get damage : yes

Does freight get mis routed : yes

Does freight disappear : yes

This can happen no matter who you use. This is why I was explaining the difference between COMPANY BRANCH vs AGENT BRANCH. Company branch locations are all part of the same computer systems. Agent Branch locations are communicated via phone, fax, and email. No inside tracking ability.

Here is the Wiki post about it that links to a long running UK-US shipping thread > http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/UK_Shipping_Info

These guys are great for air freight of a few boxes, and very reasonable in price.

I am using Pickfords, I have 300 cu ft or 8.5 cu m, cost about £1500. They pack everything for you and give you an inventory. Just waiting for it to be shipped so cant tell you how it went yet.

We had quotes from Pickfords and two companies from central Scotland. We were moving from the Scottish HIghlands so not every company was willing to travel out to handle our shipping which is why we were limited to three. In the end we went for one of the non-chain companies as their prices were considerably lower than that of Pickfords. So my advice is to google and see if you can find some companies operating from your vicinity as it might be a more affordable option than going with a big name.

Best wishes
