May seem sort of a DUH!! topic to some, especially the Pinays out there. But in the past 3 years or so I have come to realize that my old belief of "rice is rice" is far from true. Some rice tastes great with nothing but water, some needs "kick" to make it edible. Lately, we have been cooking short-grain Japanese rice, and it is masarap. Medium grains are also ok, but I have come to dislike the long-grain whites, with Jasmine being the exception. Just an observation.

Careful though, they are quite heavier in the stomach.. Easy to get full!

And oh! Those long grain rice that aren't so sticky are really good for making fried rice!

Niblet, ask her how much she eat. Haha! Sometimes even petite or skinny women can eat like men ya know.. You'll be amazed!

I have been eating Hinode short grain white rice all my life. It is the staple food here. In an effort to be "healthy" and honor the current POTUS, me and the wife have been eating Hinode hapa rice. I have noticed here that the Ilocanos are split 50/50 between Jasmine and Hindoe short grain rice.

Whole grain rice for me, that jasmine is like eating squished bread. My wife doesn't eat that much rice so it isn't all that much of a concern in the house. Certainly more than I do before but I can handle a couple times a week.

I prefer the Gen-Ji-Mai brown rice, but before I started using that, I'd mix half white, and half brown. I've actually brought back some real premium rice from Japan. You wouldn't think there would be a big difference in rice quality, but Boy you'd be wrong!! I could really tell the difference, texture, aroma, and flavor was much better. I have one of those cooker/warmers and the Japanese rice would stay white and fresher longer. But really expensive! Be sure to check the bags carefully, a lot of brands have Japanese sounding names, but are actually US grown.

Brown Jasmine rice grown in California. We got the 10 cup rice maker. After she changed from white to brown rice, a lot of digestive issues disappeared.

Huge fan of white jasmine rice, no added flavoring required since the rice cooker is in storage I have taught myself to make it in a stainless pot but yes a rice cooker is best when possible.

I have a 10-cup Zojirushi cooker. They are a tad more expensive, but you cannot make bad rice with them, and you can eat the rice 1-2 days later.

Does anyone not wash/rinse their rice prior to cooking? By running water in and swirling it around until it is mostly clear? I once read that un-rinsed rice has more vitamins. And I also saw how they dry the rice in the PI, and imagine it's mostly the same everywhere. So now I always rinse.

I was put in charge of making rice one time... threw in 2 tsp of salt and about 1 tbsp of sugar in 2 cups of rice. She ate it, and said it was good, until I told her what I did. Then I was chastised for "ruining" it. (But she ate it!)
