I'm filling out the application for my 71 year old grandmother.

Part H has a few questions that ask:

"If law requires it, are you willing to bear arms on behalf of the US, willing to perform noncomabtant services, perform work of national importance under civilian direction"

The woman is 71 years old.

I mean.... what the hell do we put? Just "no"? and attach a letter explaining that at 71 years old she is not capable???

Why not put yes? The law won't make someone her age fight... it says "if the law requires it." If some law were to be made to make the elderly fight, then she could protest as a US Citizen ;)

AOS for my husband

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

As Harpa said - just say "yes". It is a standard question. Don't make it harder than it has to be. If things got bad enough she could be asked to sew socks or bake cookies - all it is asking is would a person do their part if called to do so.

I would reply in the affirmitive.

I think the appropriate answer as others have said is yes. She IS willing. Her ability is a different story that you can figure out if that time ever comes.

The question is kinda meaningless. It's basically saying, do you swear to follow the law (with respect to military service)? Even non-citizens in the U.S. are supposed to bear arms or do whatever "if the law requires it". I think the whole point of this part is if you say yes, and then they happen to call you up in times of war and you refuse, then they can say, you lied when you naturalized, and invalidate your naturalization.
