I'm new to this forum and the whole process. I have a question I see that in a lot of the details regarding people's timeline for the visa approval it says touched. What is that? Does it show this online, or how do they know it's been touched. I've been waiting for my financie K1, I filed in Oct 5, and all it shows online is that they've gotten it. But a lot of other members have 10.01.06...touched 10.30.06...touched. So I was wondering how do they know this? and should I be concerned that the status online (at uscis.gov) hasn't changed? Thanks this is a great forum by the way. I was so confused with the whole process till I came here. Sorry if the question sounds stupid, I'm just confused.

Any time your application is handled by someone at a Service Centre, the barcode is scanned, which results in an update to the "last date" for your case on the USCIS website. When the date changes, this mean that someone has physically handled or "touched" your case. There are many reasons your application may be "touched" - from simply being moved from one desk to another, to RFE's, to being approved.

You have to set up an account on the USCIS website if you haven't already.

You need to go to the USCIS web site and access the case status section. There you can set up your personal customer account. This will allow you to check the status daily and note whether you have had any touches. Don't get to excited about touches at first. Become familiar with the estimated time lines for your type of application and your service center. Then when the touches become closer to that estimated time you can start getting excited.

Good luck.

Don't be sorry to ask any question that is what we are all here for to help each other. And if you get touched i think its a good thing it means someone has looked at your case, or at least you know its still there whether it's been moved from one desk to another, or reviewed by someone, either way at least you know that your not forogtten, and you know that your petition is not lost. So i think touches can be good. Every little step counts to the BIG APROVAL, even touches. So ask as many questions as you need to. I wish you both all the best on your process.
