So I've been thinking of things I could possibly want my husband to bring back from Egypt. I'm drawing a blank other than I really want a bram. He can't think of anything special to Egypt that would be difficult for us to find here. If you could have someone bring items from Egypt, what would they be? I'm not wanting any knick knack type stuff or artsy stuff I'm more thinking of food related items, textiles, household goods...stuff like that. I don't have a Moroccan, Palestinian, or Jordanian SO but I so could think of things I'd want from those countries lol. I'm drawing a blank in regards to Egypt. TIA!

The place was full of Egypt peeps earlier this week..... where did they all go ????

I bet you could find some nice embroidered textiles or weavings - rugs, cushion covers, wall hangings etc.

I've been trying to think about what I would ask my husband to bring back for me, and even asked him about his ideas, but the only thing we could think of is maybe gold jewelry if you like that. Maybe it's a little cheaper there. Gold prices are so high now, I can't afford my favorite hobby anymore....gold jewelry crying.gif

I don't really like the jewelry style sold here in the states, I'm more into MENA style 18K & 22K jewelry. We have some great Palestinian owned jewelry stores here (three brothers own them) that I've always bought my gold from.

Thanks for the ideas!

My husband asked if I wanted any jewelry but I declined. I don't really wear more than earrings and an occasional bracelet unless I'm going out for a special occasion. Also, I like to pick out jewelry for myself. :)

I've been trying to think of any food items but I can't think of any that I can't buy here, as far as Egypt is concerned. My boys left for Yemen yesterday and I had them tell their dad about a few food related items I wanted from Yemen, lol. I like their food more. I so want a salta pot, a stick for making aseet, and helba powder.

I was thinking that maybe a few cute fanoos/fanooses (?) would be nice since I can't really find any Ramadan decorations here and I would like to be able to decorate for the little ones.

Fanooses are a great idea. He could also bring Islamic home items such as framed Quran verses, prayer rugs, prayer beads, etc. These items are hard to find here and the quality is much better there. Think about things maybe your kids can use in the future at school (projects)such as Egyptian money, anything to do with "ancient Egypt and Pharaohs". My family really enjoyed Cartouches (rings, necklaces and paintings.) Khen El Khalili holds many treasures such as leather products, great perfume bottles, arabian shoes, anything that is 100% cotton such as bed sheets, curtains, etc.

As you can tell I love Egypt and all it has to offer. I also brought back many kids items that can't be found here. Fulla dolls (like Barbie) with a scarf. Large wall stickers in all cartoon characters, sterling silver jewerly is just beautiful there. Tea sets are perfect for any home with serving tray. All these things will help bring a little bit of Egypt into your home.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for the ideas but he's back home now. :)

He didn't spend any time in Cairo, his family lives near Alex. He didn't even go into Alex because of the protests.

He brought me a few brams in different sizes, spices, one of those huge 50lb blankets, some little trinkety things, and an evil eye thingy. He brought our daughter this silly little rooster toy that plays a Ramadan song and lights up. She went crazy for it!

We don't do Islamic artwork (I don't care for the gawdy gold gilded stuff) and we have a couple prayer rugs.

Hopefully next time he visits the whole family can go with and things are calmed down so we can enjoy the visit and do some serious shopping. I love Khan el Khalili, it was one of my favorite places when I visited.
