I am from Kentucky, the US, and he is is Curitiba, Brazil. How can I find which embassy it would go through?

Most countries only have 1 embassy. For Brazil, that's Rio de Janiero! http://www.visajourney.com/consulates/index.php?letter=B At the bottom, you'll get embassy info and embassy reviews - have a read of both, take a look at some of the profiles of people who posted reviews and see if they used joint-sponsors. You should be able to research your way around that to find out, unless someone knowledgeable replies to this thread shortly (which is likely!).

Deleted duplicate post. Sorry. Stupid internet.

Thanks so much. I am thinking this will be our best route of getting him here.

We begin by filing the i-129f correct and then go from there?

Yep, read and follow this guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide

Good luck!

And yes he knows what signing off on the paperwork will mean. He has a good degree and speaks several languages so once he gets the ability to work that wont be a problem. I have a job and will support us but it is just not adequate in terms of sponsorship. I will finish school within about 2 years and the median salary is far above what we will need. We dont plan to need any assistance in terms of government benefits that would require payback

The people that actually deserve food stamps and welfare typically don't plan on it lol

This I know. But these are benefits specifically for him correct? As long as we dont go file something for him etc his friend wont be getting any burden?

I have no doubt it will be hard, but we will make it work.

My son receives medical card, but this isnt a benefit that would count toward repayment since it is for my son and not my husband right? Or when we get married does that automatically link myself/my son to him and therefore require his friend to payback benefits even such as medical?

No, you are correct.

You and your son as a USC can have all the benefits you want.

You can have food stamps, he can't.

Ok then we are safe! The medical was the only thing I was worried about. We wont request any benefits for him. Besides that, it wont be awfully long before I am done with school and he wont even need medical assistance. I appreciate you all so much and have a much better picture of what this process is like.

Also, how long did it take for each of you from the time of filing to the time when your significant other joined you in the states?

Oh blimey, the million dollar question. Brace yourself.

It takes 5 - 9 months for the petition (I-129f) to get approved, then another 3 - 5 months on the local consulate side to apply for and issue the actual visa. You're looking at at least 8 months, but possibly longer. Once in a blue moon someone does some sort of magic incantation and gets through faster, but you'd do best mentally to set yourself up for 8 months min.

Not as bad as I imagined! That gives us time to prepare, anyway. I was reading about the interview process, which doesnt seem terribly hard. I guess what we will do now is begin the process.

I am trying as best I can to find all the fee information for separate documents.

Is there a roundabout number for document processing fees, etc?

Or somewhere I can find each fee , so that we are prepared for the costs?

Found this example of costs. Incidental costs are for a different country, but the fee costs will be the same for the petition and visa. The medical fee cost varies country to country, but it'll be the same ballpark figure as theirs:

To the OP - I would go for the marriage visa, there are more advantages than the K1.

Your friend would only have to fill in a set of papers, your fiance would be able to work very soon after entering the US (otherwise, new paperwork for AOS, and a long wait - we have people on here that have applied in August 2012 for a green card through K1/marriage and havent been approved yet), and it is cheaper financially.

USCIS [*] 22 Nov. 2011 - I-129 package sent; [*] 25 Nov. 2011 - Package delivered; [*] 25 Nov. 2011 - NOA1/petition received and routed to the California Service Center; [*] 30 Nov. 2011 - Touched/confirmation though text message and email; [*] 03 Dec. 2011 - Hard copy received; [*]24 April 2012 - NOA2 (no RFEs)/text message/email/USCIS account updated; [*] 27 April 2012 - NOA2 hard copy received.

NVC [*] 14 May 2012 - Petition received by NVC ; [*] 16 May 2012 - Petition left NVC.

EMBASSY [*] 18 May 2012 - Petition arrived at the US Embassy in Bucharest; [*] 22 May 2012 - Package 3 received; [*] 24 May 2012 - Package sent to the consulate, interview date set; [*] 14 June 2012 - Interview date, approved.

POE [*] 04 July 2012 - Minneapolis/St.Paul. [*] 16 September 2012 - Wedding Day!

AOS/EAD/AP [*] 04 February 2013 - AOS/EAD/AP package sent; [*] 07 February 2013 - AOS/EAD/AP package delivered; [*] 12 February 2013 - NOA1 text messages/emails; [*] 16 February 2013 - NOA1 received in the regular mail; [*] 28 February 2013 - Biometrics letter received (appointment date, March 8th); [*] 04 March 2013 - Biometrics walk-in completed (9 out of 10 fingerprints taken, pinky would not give in); [*] 04 April 2013 - EAD/AP card approved; [*] 11 April 2013 - Combo card sent/tracking number obtained; [*] 15 April 2013 - Card delivered.

[*] 15 May 2013 - Moved from MN to LA; [*] 17 May 2013 - Applied for a new SS card/filed an AR-11 online (unsuccessfully), therefore called and spoke to a Tier 2 and changed the address; [*] 22 May 2013 - Address updated on My Case Status (finally can see the case numbers online); [*] 28 May 2013 - Letter received in the mail confirming the change of address; [*] 31 July 2013 - Went to Romania; [*] 12 September 2013 - returned to the US using the AP, POE Houston, everything went smoothly; [*] 20 September 2013 - Spoke to a Tier2 and put in a service request; [*] 23 September 2013 - Got "Possible Interview Waiver" letter (originally sent on August, 29th to my old address, returned and re-routed to my current address); [*] 1 October 2013 - Started a new job.

Please know that after the K-1 visa there is adjustment of Status which is $1070. Then after 2 years you will have to file to remove conditions which is $590. The prices also keep going up. Learn about the K-1 visa process for now, but know that there is more that comes after that, and more to pay. Adjustment of Status is not "years off" but just after he gets to the US. He cannot work or stay here legally without Adjustment of Status.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!
