That's what I was trying to summarize in my long post (#11) above. I hope it answered your financial questions.

You can read what the embassy has to say here. Scroll down to police certificates. They speak of former residents of the US. http://london.usembassy.gov/application_documents.html

Yes, thank you. I think I know understand the financial/asset requirements (5x if applying for fiancee, 3x if applying for spouse - i.e. already married). I am still a bit curious about the co-sponsor situation. While my immediate family would not qualify, I have many single friends that earning $100k+, so they would meet the requirement, but I had read that non-family co-sponsors are not always considered. Does this vary at different consular offices?

You are getting waaay ahead of yourself.

Too many ifs and buts, best to wait until something changes.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I don't think so. I am trying to be prepared as the decision (the only 'if' that you have referred to above) is expected in the next 3 weeks and would be effective immediately according to all of the information that I have read regarding the matter.

Does anyone have any advice about whether or not non-family member co-sponsors are considered to be appropriate? I had ready in a few posts that such co-sponsors were completely disregarded for certain individuals. Is this something that varies by consular office?

It does seem to vary by country.

London appears to me as one of the more lenient embassies and they judge cases regarding sponsorship at the interview and are flexible (as Nich-Nick suggested above). I've seen plenty of people use non-family members as sponsors on here, though. The official documentation on it, from the USCIS website, explicitly says "A joint sponsor must meet all the same requirements as you, except the joint sponsor does not need to be related to the immigrant."

There is no 5x for a fiancé. There is no number actually written in the law. K1 is a non-immigrant visa and is a little hybrid (not quite like either non-immigrant or immigrant) It is for the officer in London doing a K1 case to decide that he feels assured that the immigrant will not go on public assistance. It's pretty flexible if you read the link I gave you for London about public charge. A fiancé can even self sponsor.

For a spouse visa, it is all written in the law precisely because that is an immigrant visa. 3x if the spouse sponsors with no additional help, and 5x if it not a spouse.

Your friends with 100k should be just fine as aponsors. The I-864 is a legally binding contract that can be enforced. It is the I-134 for a fiancé that is not legally binding so a particular consulate officer might wonder about the commitment of a casual acquaintance. Either visa you go with will have an I-864 at some point. With a fiancé visa, it won't be until she would apply for a greencard. So depending on the visa, your I-864 may be reviewed in London (spouse visa), or USCIS at NY local office (fiancé greencard interview), or the National Benefits Center (fiancé greencard decision with no interview).

Thank you very much. I (obviously) misunderstood about the asset/financial requirements and it seems easier than I had expected if applying via the K-1 route. I went back to the link you had posted previously, it is very helpful.
