Hi everyone! We filed our 1-130 with my passport in my previous name. We have only received the NOA1. I have now gotten my passport in my married name. Will I have an opportunity to change the name for my green card etc? Our petition is at the benefits center in Missouri.

Once you get to the NVC stage, you can used your updated name on the DS230, and maybe attach a letter explaining why you didn't use that name on the original I-130 petition.

USC who lived in Manabí, Ecuador with hubby from 2009 - 2013. Hubby became a naturalized American citizen in August 2016. Currently living together in northern Virginia.

When you get to the NVC stage, fill out the forms using the name in your current passport. I would incoude a copy of the new passport and if you still have the old one, a copy of it with however they indicate that it is cancelled. If that does not work, hopefully the Embassy/Consulate will catch this when they issue the visa as it must match the name in the passport that it is attached to.

It shouldn't be an issue. I renewed my passport during the NVC process, and all we had to do to change my name is send an email to NVCINQUIRY and let them know that I changed all my Brazilian documents to my married name. ( of course, I sent attachments with all the scanned documents )

Its not that problematic :-)

04-16-2011: Started Dating

08-30 2012: We got married


10-22-2012: I130 registered at the USCIS

02-02-2013: I130 approved


02-27-2013: Petition registered at NVC

05-20-2013: NVC Case complete

05-27-2013: Received email NVC Case complete

06-04-2013: Called NVC - Interview scheduled for 07-05-2013

06-04-2013: Confirmation from NVC by email


06-06-2013: Left NVC

06-10-2013: Arrived at Rio de Janeiro Embassy - CEAC website shows case as "Ready"

06-19-2013: Recieved confirmation email from the Rio de Janeiro Embassy

07-02-2013: Medical

07-05-2013: Interview


07-25-2013: I-601 Waiver received in NSC

Your green card will be issued with the name on the passport. Keep the old one though since you did fill out paperwork with that name. However, all future paperwork should have your married name vs maiden. :) Have a wonderful journey! Read the NVC Guide for Montreal Beneficiaries, forwards, backwards and inside out! :D
