SLEC sputum?

What if your chest Xray was clear, no history of TB, no symptoms , never at all experienced something that has to do with TB.. but the doctor will tell you to undergo sputum test just to make sureeverything is clear as crystal? What's their purpose of doing this? Parents had to undergo the 3 day sputum test coz they were told they just wanna make sure, and if everything turns negative, they will release the results to usem. I also wanna know what is the sputum culture(8weeks) I've read in the threads? is this different from sputum test? they were not told about it. Only the 3-day sputum test. i'm just pissed why both my parents have to undergo the test. Why not only one of them? While my mom got her xray result from department of heath from 2 months ago, and was clear as crystal. Anyway, my mom work for the govt as a nurse and they are required to undergo those kind of exams at least yearly.

If your mom was a nurse especially that of the government then the more they will require you to have a sputum test. That would only mean that your mom has been exposed to different pathogens such as that of TB. Even if she has a yearly X-ray done, it is not the St. Luke's that does them am I correct? St. Luke's is the only hospital that the USEM is affiliated with. Actually, irregardless if you have St. Luke's do an X-ray before the medical they would still require you to get the Xray and pass your previous Xray results.

So far a lot of people are dreading the medical exam because of the Xray result. Scarring of the lungs can be caused by other diseases like pneumonia and Xray is NOT the golden standard so to be sure they will require a sputum test/culture which is the GOLDEN STANDARD in diagnosing TB.

They need to collect sputum for 3 days and the results will be released after 8 weeks. The reason that they both need to undergo it is because TB is a communicable disease. If one has them then the relative might have gotten it also. They don't want to risk anything.

Let's just hope that they will be negative. :) Good luck and God bless. ^_^

Thanks for the input. Just wondering, Is it mandatory to have all nurses undergo sputum test at slec?

Oh no! Not all nurses will have to undergo it. :) It only shows that even if you are a nurse of the government doesn't excuse you of having the golden standard. Look at it this way. Since your mom is a nurse, she is bound to be exposed to diseases and since xray cannot fully diagnose TB and since st. Luke's uses a clearer kind of radiograph than most hospitals, they might have seen a very tiny scar that COULD suggest TB. However, since it isn't a definitive result then they make sure of it by having your parents take the sputum exam. :)

You can never be too sure you know especially with the immigration clamor nowadays. They are just holding their end of the bargain. I'm a nurse too and I already am fearing the xray since I have had the cough before and you never know if that alone left a scar on my lungs. We'll still have to see. For now, you can't say no to the sputum test I'm afraid. Let's just hope things are ok :)

Don't worry, Everything will be ok. If the Sputum Smear comes negative then it is most likely the culture will become NEGATIVE as well. ;) But mind you, you have to wait and finish the 8weeks time frame.. Ours climb up to even 9 weeks because of the holidays plus they kept on saying over the phone "no result yet sir"... Been there, done that, but everything went well for us, except for the "waiting game" that sucks bigtime! :( Goodluck and God Bless! :)

Thanks. Yes I'm hoping and praying that everything will be ok. Good thing is, I had my parents undergo the Medical Exam even before their case complete at NVC. They actually do not have the interview appointment yet at USEM. Looking forward for the JUNE/JULY interview though, just in time with their results.

My wife, Chinook, is a nurse. Fortunately, her x-ray was clear and she did not have to undergo the sputum collection, the smear tests, and the TB culture at St. Lukes. However, Chinook's friend who is also a nurse, did not pass the x-ray and had to undergo everything.

The results of the three smear tests will be known within a few days after sputum collection. The results of the culture will be known within five to eight weeks. If St. Lukes calls you before the eight weeks are up, it's usually bad news.

Exactly same thing happened to my parents. Dapat nga schedule sila for sputum next week din. But my mom told them, Kelangan nila uwi ng Bacolod and showed their tickets. Kaya binigyan sila ng consideration. And tomorrow will be the 2nd day of their sputum test. Mom told me, marami daw ang pina sputum test sa isang araw. Grabe tlaga. Yes, good thing we had them do the medical exam early. Do you have the interview appointment for them already? Still waiting for the email..kaka case complete lang nila on Monday. Good luck and God Bless. I hope everything will be fine.

Our cases are still with NVC. I called them last night to check if there's any update, but the lady said they haven't even started reviewing our forms yet, both AOS and IV. That's fine. My parents can't have their interview not til 2nd week of July anyway because of this sputum test. I just want to know coz they were advised to be in slec at 6:30am for 3 consecutive days. If they show up late, they will pay the fees again. What time does your parents go to slec for the sputum collection?

How much time they usually spend in slec for sputum collection? Are they out of the building around 10am? What hotel are they staying in? We used hotel soriente for their 2-day check up. According to my sister, it wasnt that nice in there so i'm thinking to go to city garden suite.
