American marriage license but getting married in Sweden. Question about SSN.

My fiance (USC) and I are getting married in Sweden in two months. Yay :)

But, Swedish Tax Office who handles marriage licenses there, needs 'no impediment certificates' to issue us the license. I already got my cert. , but there is just no way to get such document in the U.S. The Swedish Tax Office already said affidavits are not acceptable, ugh...

Long story short, I found a way for us to get an American marriage license (as a proof of no impediments to marriage), without a need of me physically being there

Now, I have an SSN cause I lived in the U.S. on and off for few years (on student exchange visas). I also fell out of status for two years... (then went back home). (I did not accrue any unlawful presence, in case anyone asks.. )

Which brings me to my question: Do I put down my SSN down on the U.S. marriage license application, or should I skip it?

Maybe a stupid question, but just want to make sure :)

Oh and also, could this US Marriage License be used as our bona fide marriage evidence? :)

Thanks!

I think you're confusing what bona fide marriage evidence is. It's not evidence to show you've gotten married. It's evidence to show that you are living like a married couple would live within the limitations of a long distance relationship. They're expecting evidence that you have a genuine, on-going relationship, where you depend on each other emotionally and financially.

If you have an SSN you should write it down.

Yes put your SSN on the US mariage license application, it would show more of a direct link to you.

The US marriage license would not be a bona fide marriage evidence, it is a license unless it was filed in the U.S. then it is not official (am I right all here?)

You could just get the license do a weddding at the courty house where you got it and then file it and then take the license to Sweden to use it over there.

good luck that is my two cents hope it helps

A US marriage license will not satisfy the Swedish authorities. Here's a link to the US Embassy, Stockholm's website page explaining what to do. http://sweden.usembassy.gov/acs_marriage.html

I think if neither party is a resident of Sweden you may also need:

Besides, you may be able to apply for a marriage license on the internet, but most likely presence of both parties would be required to pick it up..

In other words, you won't get the license if you're not personally present at the office.

Hey guys! Thanks :)

We know it ALL about getting the Swedish marriage license. To get one, first we have to go through the "hindersprovning" process, which is basically an "investigation" whether there any impediments to marriage.

Our case is being taken care of a very nice lady (tax office official) in Sweden. We recently sent her all (well almost all) the documents required.

My fiance obtained his "free to marry" certificate from The Commonwealth of VA, but.. this wasn't enough. There is no other documents that can be issued by the state of Virginia that would state his single status and no impediments to marriage.

This is what she said:

"The easiest way to do this is by getting a marriage license from your local authorities (as if you were to marry in the US).

If this is provided, the application will be complete!".

We will pick up our Swedish Marriage License in person, when we get to Sweden.

Ugh, who knew getting married is so stressful?! :P

We are waiting to hear from her whether the marriage license we want to send her would be enough. Hopefully we'll know today, so we can go ahead and finish this bureaucracy nightmare :bonk:

(We already know for sure that we will be able to get our American marriage license without me being there in person. )

:hehe:

To me this all sounds very strange.

Me and my husband were gonna get married in Sweden in October of last year. My husband got a "record of no record" from the state of Michigan to prove he was eligible to get married.

So after spending $135 on that we found out that the Swedish Tax office no longer requires anything like that, and all my husband had to do was show up and prove his identity when we were gonna pick up the wedding license.

I thought getting married was difficult ( Bureaucracy of getting married with a foreigner )

But then I almost laughed at that thought, after going through USCIS.

Well, it seems like each tax office has different rules. I've read of people needed this or that or nothing at all..

Did you get married in Stockholm?

Also, are you Swedish? maybe that's why they waived the requirement in your case?

Neither of us are Swedish residents, so this may be a reason they still need this document from us. Well, from my fiance. My polish no impediments certificate was fine.

We still didn't hear from the tax office as of yet. We are hoping this will happen today and they will 'ok' an american marriage license. (from DC. My fiance is from VA, but we can't get one there, as the application must be made under oath and signed in person etc. Ugh. )

Yes, I'm Swedish and my husband is American. We were gonna get married in Helsingborg, but plans changed due to a motorcycle accident and we got married in the U.S. instead.

Is it possible for your fiancé to get a record of no record? Because that one is easy to get, my husband printed out a form, filled it out, paid for a money order and sent it in.

And what it does is that they do a search for every year since he turned 18, to show that he isn't already married.

Ohh I see... hope the accident wasn't too serious?

The lady taking care of our hindersprvoning told us that a U.S. marriage license will suffice.

We already sent her my fiance's Free To Marry certificate, but it wasn't enough. Marriage licences are court issued so maybe that's why they're more acceptable to the Skatteverket?

It seems that there is no one single rule for all tax offices. Also, maybe the fact that you're Swedish made it easier for you guys to get a swedish license.

What authority issued your husband that 'record of no record'? I am almost positive this one is impossible to get in VA ..

Besides, if Free To Marry certificate wasnt enough, I am positive a 'record of no record' won't be either.

:)
