My K-1 Visa was approved and I am moving to the USA May 23! I know I can apply for my SSN right away but do I need a work permit to work? I didn't realise I may not be able to work right away! Can someone let me know if I need to fill out the work permit form at the same time as my adjustment of status, or let me know if I can just start work right away because I have a SSN.

Thanks!

K-1 Visa Approved! Moving May 22/13!

Yes you will not be able to work until your work authorization is approved, currently taking about 3 months. You will need to apply for this. :guides: to get more information on adjusting your status.

Also :time: , you can do so by going to your name in the upper right corner clicking the drop down and hitting timeline add edit. From there you're be instructed on what to do.

Congrats!!! and Welcome to the forum!!! :dancing:

The next step in your immigration journey will be the Adjustment of Status (AOS) process. Take a look at the GUIDES section on AOS:

http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

There you will find information about AOS process, including, Employment Authorization Document (EAD), and Advanced Parole (AP). Another good place to start reading is the AOS from Family-based Visas Forum:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/7-adjustment-of-status-green-card-from-family-based-visas/

Good luck, and as others have mentioned…..:time: It helps everyone that uses the forum.

Cheers.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)

yes you need it. Yes you can do it at the same time as adjustment of status. Form I -765 You cannot work right away. Expect it to take 3 months AFTER you file the application which is AFTER you get married.

SSNs do not authorize work and the Social Security office does not determine who is eligible to work.

Get the SSN right away though because you need it for lots of things besides work.
