We just bought flights for a vacation and realized that my husband's passport expires next year! Jan 2014. We just sent in our I-130. How do you think we should take care of this?

We tried to call the USA embassy but were put on hold and they never picked up.

Renew the passport, bring both the old one and the new one to the interview in case questions are asked about it.

renew it 3 months prior to interview date (that's a good metric, really)

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

you get notification of the interview date, about a month forward. however...

it seems you are applying for a CR-1 visa, so best (really) to renew passport around the time that the DS-230 is submitted into NVC. For many VJ members, that really is the '3 months before interview' timetick.

Time and timing, alas, is hard to estimate, but at NVC, mostly you control the pace.

  • 4 weeks later...

We got married on March 9th in Costa Rica, My husbands passport was about to expire on April 4th so right after I flew back home, he made an appt to renew his passport. He got the new one a few days before we filed. Our attorney just wanted a copy of the entire original passport ( all pages) and then just the photo page on the new one to show it has been renewed. Of course he will have to bring the new one to the interview. We took care of it before we filed because I didn't want any reasons for an RFE. It is very easy to renew a passport in CR.
