Can someone please explain to me why do you even need to report to SS after becoming a citizen? We did that after getting our green cards and we received new cards with no restrictions on it, looks like a normal SSN card.

Is there a difference in status (in Social Security) between permanent resident and a citizen? AFAIK there is no difference and you can live here all your lives as P.R., and you are still eligible for benefits (is you are eligible to begin with, meaning if you paid into it).

For 2 main reasons:

1) You lose your Certificate of Naturalization before you can apply for a US passport. Now without a Green Card, you have no document proving that you not just climbed over a fence and are unlawfully present in the United States. You can spend $345 for a replacement, and only 12 to 21 MONTHS later you can get a new driver's license and start working again.

2) You drive along the Arizona border, brown-skinned as you are, or in Alabama, and them nice cops ask you for your driver's license which you forgot in the hotel room. If you know your driver's license number, and the cops access the federal database, they'll know that you are a US citizen, how you look, how tall you are, what hair color you have, that you are registered to vote, and how often you go to the bathroom at night.

The SSA's database is a federal one, and it's linked to state databases. If the SSA has listed you as a US citizen, then every cop, every deputy, every CBP officer, can confirm this within seconds. If you are still listed as a foreigner in the SSA database, you might spend a night in a jail cell.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Was about two years ago that President assigned the task to the SS administration to keep track of immigration status of all SS card holders. USCIS has been assigned the task of new US citizenship naturalizations. But to be sure its done, best to get it done yourself.

System is new, and as Brother H has stated still dealing with retards, DOS is suppose to also have these updates, but like the SS will still want to see your certificate. Also was proposed to issue all new cards, since the 30's some old 50 different cards have been issued. New one is suppose to be a lot more difficult to counterfeit. but haven't seen anything yet.

Obama gave the SS administration 100 million bucks to keep track of immigration, but with about 330 million people, that is only 30 cents per card.

I would still keep your certificate in a safe place.

NickD - was that money to make a new system, or actually train SSA employees about the SAVE database system and how to properly use it ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I hope it's to learn how to use it. I went to SSA on 2/1/17 to update my name in the system. I am not a us citizen I am adjusting status to LPR. I got my second EAD card with my married name. My DL revolves around this. So my license is expired and will remain so until SSA can verify my immigration status which they claim can take 4 frigging weeks. What the hell happened to SAVE?
