VOTER REGISTRATION MISTAKE

How did they not find out about this when you applied for AOS in 2010? Do the experts on the board know if the background checks for AOS are less extensive than the background checks for N400? In theory, you are not even eligible for LPR if you register to vote. In fact you are immediately deportable. Can you explain how this "accident" happened? Did you not fill out the form by hand and attest that you are a citizen? Or did some DMV staffer electronically affix your signature without you filling out the form by hand?

This distinction may be the only thing that can save you. After a long battle...

the tx DL system back in 2005 had a check mark about voter registration. i was illegal in the country back then, i had no idea what i was doing [22 years old and stupid]. i was happy to finally renew my DL

it wasn't until a month later received a registration card, which i never used and no longer have.

its a simple check mark on the form, among tons of other questions. but it is what it is. that's how i mistakenly got it.

i never went there looking for a registration to vote.

That makes a little more sense, and makes one wonder why they make it so easy to skirt the system like that, whether it be accidentally or for some, on purpose, it makes no sense to make committing fraud so simple.

In some states the drivers license form asks for whether you are a citizen or not; to make it worst, the default is yes (if doing it online). And to make it even worst (if doing it in person), the clerk taking your application might not even ask you and mark the default answer....

Also, to some, there is no distinction between a GC and citizenship...How would they know?? There is no specific/explicit warning -that i know of- the makes it clear to a newly immigrant (or K-1 future immigrant) that they are not citizens. Heck even USCs -and I have several first hand experiences- don't always know the difference!

Most USCs have their entire immigration knowledge from 2 movies: 'Green Card' and more recently 'The Proposal' and are perplex that your fiancee or wife have to wait for several months to come into the country.

Real scenario, a few years ago right before 911 a young miss early 20s was legally in the country thru her parents

went to school there. Went to the mall with friends when sign up voters registration was in high gear, along with

her homegirls they were the youths being encouraged to register to vote, out of being dumb, not knowlegable. or

thinking segal and had a right to she signed up, fast forward to after 911 (everything scrutinized) her parents

just became USC and tells her to get her petition in there, she interview , told them she already registered to vote

and was denied (her parents never knew) they got an atty who rectified the matter it took about 2 yrs, so don't let

negative arguments discourage you, speak to an atty , explain and by the grace of god it will get sort out, do not sit

there only as a LPR and more rules added to where this will be found out ,for instance they calling you for jury duty,

get moving and fix it on your own legally ....Beast wishes.

TX is, well, TX....lots of rather 'odd' things happen here... If you want some true gems, go check the amendments to their constitution in regards of marriage: they were trying to introduce wording to avoid having to recognize same-sex marriage, inclusive to people who changed sex and generally created a mess..here is a hint; Article 1, Section 32; pay attention to the second part of the section...which some interpret as banning of marriage all together....

It is easy for people that aren't in this to say go ahead and apply it isn't them that could be deported for life. If that is truely what you have your heart set on I would pay very good money to have a consulatation with at least 2 of the best immigration lawyers for this specific type of thing you can find not the first yahoo that comes up in google search. Right now the laws are very much against you. Immigration reform may soften this as a large number of illegals may also run afoul of this and it seems the governement is bent on rolling out the welcome mat to as many of these smucks as they can. You may find a year from now they redefine claim of citizenship to something more active than enrolling at the DMV. In fact in one of those pricey consults you should ask about any pending changes. Right now you can wait it out until things are more favorable.

You need to cancel your registration immediately, and get a letter from the voting registration board that you were registered by mistake.

since you didn't actually vote, I think you will be in good shape, also I would take an experienced lawyer in these issues with me to the interview. I read one story similar to yours, and he was granted the citizenship.

Incorrect. "Proof of lawful status" is required.

Somehow I feel that Texas is to blame. People from other very lax DMV voter's registration states had the same problem [...]

Texas pushes voter registration rather hard, but the DMV offices seem to be pretty good at NOT offering registration to non-citizens. Edited March 21, 2013 by TBoneTX

Jawaree are you saying that if they called u for jury duty, it's most likely bc u registered to vote? My husband was called once for jury duty and we had to bring the supreme court proof of his immigrant status and he went showed his EAD card and that's it.
