Banana Ketchup

Anyone here ever make their own banana ketchup? My wife got a whole lot of free bananas and in trying to use them up I thought I would try a simple recipe I found online. But first wanted to see if anyone here makes it and knows of a good recipe to use. My wife is excited about trying my homemade banana ketchup.

Incidentally, it was first introduced during WW2 when there was a shortage of regular ketchup, and it was used as a substitute at that time, and became the favorite since.

Never heard of using banana like that. We use the extras for banana bread.

My wife usually buys it at the asian store, made in the Philippines. I really ended up liking it better than regular tomato ketchup, but it is rather difficult to shake it out of the bottle. I will use a wide mouth container when I make mine (one of our son's old sippy cups I reckon, hehe.

The recipe I found online from a Filipino uses garlic, onion, vinegar, crushed red pepper (I will use hot sauce) and I will use brown sugar instead of the white sugar in her recipe.

Sounds interesting. I will talk to my asawa to see if she will make it.

Good luck on making banana ketchup! I do not use ketchup at all but I've tried banana ketchup in my childhood in the Philippines, along with Mang Tomas and Pinakurat.

I have a friend in LA who worships ketchup. She brings ketchup in her purse wherever she goes and she always drizzles ketchup on her food, be it Thai, Indian, Chinese, etc. blink.gif

I love that Mang Tomas all-around sarsa, kinda like what they give you at Andok's only you're not limited to those little packets. I could never get into the banana ketchup; it tastes funny to me. Maybe you can make liquor out of bananas somehow; that would be nice :)

Well, it is cooling right now. Soon as it stops steaming I will transfer it to bottles/jars. The person who provided the recipe says it will get really thick when refrigerated, just like store brand banana ketchup. It has sort of a sweet taste, a little, like the sweetness of BBQ sauce, and tangy too, and just enough spiciness from the red pepper asian hot sauce I had in the fridge to give it a kick. I am thinking it will taste great on chicken. My wife said they used it to make spaghetti sauce. Using the brown sugar instead of white sugar gave it a color similar to light brown gravy. I opted not to use the food coloring as was optional.

Anything that is not Heinz is not Ketchup. Turn back.. Non Heinz is evil.

Yeh...first time I made it. I think the bananas were a little too ripe though, and had to add a bit more cider vinegar to it, and also added a little corn starch because not thick enough. But now it seems perfect. It really will taste good with chicken, or anything else that would be good with a thick tangy sauce like that. Never would have thought to use bananas for a sauce like that... Thanks to WW2 and the Philippines and my wife I dont think I ever want tomato ketchup again, hehe. I do all the cooking, and fortunately my son likes EVERYTHING I cook. He will love this sauce too I am sure.He is a banana addict. But you cant really tell it has bananas in it.... I cant taste them.

It sort of has a resemblance to salsa, at least this recipe does, with a consistency of ketchup, with the onion, red pepper and garlic in it. My wife liked it too, which says something at least.
