German social programs after marriage

My fiance is a student in Germany and will graduate in July of 2007. We are getting married this Christmas and I was wondering how her student loans will be effected by our marriage. We will be living apart until she graduates (I live in the States).

Is there anything else we should be aware of, for example medical coverage?

She should ask her insurance, because as a student she will be most likely insured through her parents. As long as she lives in Germany she will need a German health plan which is not that expensive if she chooses a gesetzliche health plan. I am not certain, but sure that if she gets married she cannot be insured through her parents anymore. But since she is attending college the rates of the AOK e.g. are about 50 Euros a month.

I myself have student loans, but German student loans don't have to be paid back right away, we have a two year mercy time until payments start. She just has to tell the Bafoeg people (student loan people) her new address in the US. You will be able to make payments from the US, but I advise you to keep a German bank account for that reason (transfer fees are expensive and you cannot pay a student loan with a credit card).

She just has to call some people to find out about her situation! It is easy!

Good luck,

Anna

When you both get married than your income will play a part of how much she will get as a student loan. You have to report it to the Bafögamt. In her paperwork the dependency will switch from her parents to you. Her parents income wont count then anymore.

After she is married she cannot get coverage trough her parents anymore, but as Anna already said she will be able to get student coverage at the AOK e.g.

Good luck with everything
