Dear friends,

I will be going back home to get married and then file the petition for my wife.

She wants to change her last name from her maiden name to my last name and we can make a marriage certificate with the name changed.

But she has all the documentations under her maiden name especially her passport.

So, what should i do? Should i have her not change the last name from her maiden name or there is some other document i can create that would justify the last name change?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Carrying the marriage license with the passport does a fine job of explaining the name change. Many K1 immigrants to the USA do this until their passports need to be renewed. As long as she's still there, it would be a good idea for her to start updating all her ID's and passport to her new married name, while you're waiting for the petition to go through the process.

I decided to wait to change mine based on the overwhelming advice of vj saying to do so. I'll change it once our process is finished.

I changed everything before we filed. I needed a new passport anyway and waited until I had my marriage certificate in hand. Then I changed my name on my drivers license and passport. Then I changed my bank accounts and credit card. Most of my bills I've changed online but some still send to my old name. I informed my employer of my name change so that my tax information would also come in my new name.

We were married late May and I had everything changed and in hand by late July. He got his new job in Sept which we were waiting on to file anyhow.

tell your fiancee to change her name to match the wife's last name. That way, when they need to swap passports, it's easier.

You seem to be a very smart man, is that what you did?

i not have two females to worry about, alas.

Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia - these countries - the man likes to swap out on occassion, so when all of the women have the same last name, is very easy to travel on just the one passport.

Perhaps I misunderstood?

Yes, you misunderstood me and the others on the same thread did not.

If you're getting married in Nepal and your wife is taking your last name - have her change the passport to reflect that. Embassy only issues visas in the passport name and green card comes in the name visa was printed in so unless you're ready to part with additional money for I-90 to change the GC from maiden to married name, you'll have passport changed on time and before interview.

You can send I-130 without having your wife's passport copy - it's only needed for NVC and afterwards - so 6-7 months after filing I-130.

Thank you, that is exactly what I thought of doing.
