Document translations by competent (?) translator

Hi, beautiful people of VJ!

As a French canadian (with a french divorce certicate) I have a question regarding this piece of information :

Per the USCIS, documents not in English must be translated. The policy states as follows: "All documents that are in a language other than English must be submitted with a translation. The person translating the document must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that he/she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English."

Can someone please tell me what "that he/she is competent to translate" means? Does that mean a certified translator or just anyone who can translate? It is not exactly precise... A friend of mine is a english-french translator, that's what she does full time as a living, but she is not certified (she said - I didnt even know there was such a thing as a certification for translators). Can I use her services to translate my paperwork?

Your spouse can translate it. The translations should be formatted to match the original form.

There is a template in the guides or forms, etc. for a self translation certification for them to sign

Montreal had special requirements when I had my interview and they discussed the accuracy of a translation made by a member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario instead of the Quebec Association...

You can find an "approved" translator here: http://ottiaq.org/ - or you could write and ask the consulate. Oh, and don't forget to get an extra copy or two, it's usually not costly and then you have them, in case you ever need them.

I got my french birth certificate translated by a member of the ATIO (as La Souris mentioned). Specifically, I went to The Centre For Education and Training in Missisauga (TCET has a few offices around Ontario) and a certified translator translated my birth certificate for $84. They also provided a Commissioner of Oath who also certified the translation on top of the ATIO seal. It took them 3 weeks I think, and they were very professional. Make sure to keep extra copies of the translation as you will need them for AOS and such.

One of my co-worker did the translation for me ! No need to hire an official translator at all ! Save your money for when you file for AOS (1070$usd) !! Here is the "certification letter" you need to attached with your original and translated document
