PBS had a show in Sesame Street a short time ago, and one of the things they mentioned was that the international sesame streets created their own characters, and didn't get to import the ones from America - creating a unique verseion in each country.

I still have a snuffy stuffed animal (and a big bird, a cookie monster...)
