I was way below for my last years return and few months before my fiance's interview I worked 40 hours to be a little over the poverty limit for a family of 3 and it was no problem! He passed the interview! :)

We were one of those who got approved back in Sept 2012 using I-864 w/I-864a. We never even turned in our I-134 during the interview process even though we had it waiting in the wings just in case. I also during the the interview process told them of our reason for turning in the I-864 instead of I-134 was based off information provided to me during a call I made to USCIS. I wrote down the name of the person I spoke to along with there employee#, the time and date of the call. In fact it was my call to USCIS that was the catalyst for me to even consider using I-864. I called several times during the NoA1-NoA2 waiting period. I had a few customer service reps unwilling to assist in providing info, and a few who readily suggested the I-864 as option. If you opt to pursue trying to use a cosponsor I would call them until I had someone who provided the same info, assuming they may have taped the conversation... it never hurts to leave a paper trail. I was determined to leave no stone unturned and did whatever it took to increase our chances for the approval of using a co-sponsor.

One thing of note that may have also been in our favor was looking at the earning potential of your fiance(e) as well. I know that it's the sponsor's resposibility ultimately, but they're really looking as to whether your fiance(e) could become a public charge. They inquired about my wife's work experience quite extensively during the interview process. I remember them asking whether she actually worked in her field of study or if she pursued another career after she graduated. She's a graduate of Nursing with several years experience in the field. Perhaps it's just me but as far as I could see it appeared to be help sway the decision in our favor.

Another factor was that I was also present for my wife's interview and I got asked a few questions as well. I personally wanted to be there to explain our need for the Co-Sponsor should the need arise. Every case is different obviously, but it seems to me that during the interview process they wanted to make sure (1)our relationship was genuine, and (2)to make sure that my wife would not become a public charge after arrival.

On I-134 I put the total gross income for that 40 hours throughout the whole year and didn't write last year's because I was advised that and they are more interested on your current income. I also sent 3 paystubs, letter of employment and last years tax transcript which they didn't bother asking for most of it. The interviewer only took last years tax transcript and the I-134 from my fiance. But then I would come prepare for all of it because not everyone is the same.
