Interview is in Montreal... Will this pose a problem? I thought it was July it expired but it's June 6th 2013 and my interview is on December 13th.

Possibly will. They are very "to the letter of the law" in the US. I would renew it and expedite it if at all possible. You can ask for the old one back so that you can take it to the consulate to show them both. I think an expedited request takes 24 hours. If you do it first thing on Monday, make sure to go to a Service Canada Centre in your area to get it done.

You could always email Montreal to see for sure, though.

I think if you just explain your situation and bring photocopies of proof of your visa being issued, they should be able to help you. Canadian government is known to sometimes be more about the "spirit" or "intention of the law." Normally they only expedite if you're leaving soon, but if they know there is another reason for your need, they would probably help you out.

We went through the same thing, I think the paperwork says 6 months from the day you plan to enter the US. We renewed the passport before sending in packet 3 because you have to sign that saying you have everything you need including that. We did the 2-9 day expedite, it took a week to get it back. The lady that took our paperwork at Montreal did check to make sure there was 6 months left. When you renew it, your passport number changes, I don't know if that will be an issue since you filled out all your paperwork with the current one.

My husband did a 2-9 expedite on his passport and on the day they said it would be ready (the day we were leaving) I ended up sitting in the car in downtown Hamilton ON for 3 hours while they did it on the spot because they never got around to it. He went in the building 5 times and they kept saying '30 more minutes' at one point the guy said '1 hour I'm goin on lunch now' #######???

Just get it done asap and do it on 24hrs and avoid the same situation if possible. Or maybe other centers around Canada are better organized.

We don't have this option in the us though so I do commend them on that

I renewed mine just before the interview. The change in passport number isn't an issue. I agree with the others, I'd apply now and rush it.

With simplified renewal it should be okay.

I went down to the USA in Dec last year (stayed until Jan 2012) and my passport expired in Feb and I didn't have a single question asked beyond the usual. Nor a passport stamp. But this is a different case and because you have the time to renew, you should because it's easier to do when you're in Canada! :D

It doesn't? that's what I been worried about. For a passport renewal I have to turn in my current passport but I figure if I have a photocopy of my old passport and new passport I should be fine.

You guys don't get your old ones back?

The US gives our old ones back. I thought it was a little weird; not really sure what for.

It has a bunch of holes punched into the number now though.

You have an option to get it back (at least u used to)simple check the box on the form

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

yes, they still do, they just punch holes in the old one to invalidate it.

No, not really, but she said she hoped she would be good with a new passport and copy of the old one.

I don't think she needs the old one, but if that's what she wants, then even better to have the real thing than a photocopy.

I carried mine around in Canada because it had my maiden name on it and it was the only thing that matched up to my bank card that still had my maiden name on it.
