I got my visa last Saturday. I am very much happy to receive it since it is going to be my birthday this Tuesday. But I got sad when I realised that I will be leaving my family soon. Is this normal? I mean, how do you overcome this phase? My fiance wanted me to leave Thursday it was a good thing I haven't had the CFO yet. It was a blessing that the CFO people were being a pain in the bum.

I just hope I will new friends around my area so I wont have a problem adjusting. I will be in Northern California so I hope I will find a couple of girls who are in the same place and same situation as I am.

You'll blend in quickly, North California is home away from home with too many Filipinos but watch for the wrong crowd and you'll do just fine.

Have a safe flight and welcome to US soon!

Thank you. I will be in Napa. My fiance told me that his neighbour's wife is already waiting for me. She is a Filipina too and she is excited to introduce me to some Filipinas as well.

Man, leaving my family sucks so bad. I thought it was not going to be melodramatic.

I hope you are prepared for the weather change as well. The Napa Valley is going to be much cooler than you're used to even in the summer unless you're from the mountains in Northern Luzon.

If you can, make sure your parents and siblings have a netbook or a smartphone so you can keep them updated with Facebook or a blog. Try to use Skype to keep connected with your friends and family back home. Ease into your new home and don't worry so much. Everyone gets homesick, it's just a matter of making your new home a priority in your life.

Then that's great news plus we don't live in the old world anymore. With the advent of technologies, we could easily connect with people around the world with just a touch of a button.

My 2 cents, I went to her interview and we celebrated the approval. We went back to her village and celebrated some more. As we got closer to the time to leave the sad faces appeared. It was hard to say goodbye to papa, mama, sisters and brothers with everyone crying. It was one long cab ride to Bangkok.

We got here and she was so excited. Then she got a little homesick. She had a phone so she could call the family all the time. She didn't drive much at home and relied on public transportation. I got her all the things she needed to cook like at home, found a good Thai market. The homesickness wore off and she atarted veturing out on her own. Public transportation sucks near where we live but there are a lot of shops she can walk to. She got an ATM card and can now go to the market or shopping, it has really changed her outlook. I work long hours and we live a comfortable life. The weather has been really nice so not much of a shock.

While love may conquer many things, it is definitely a big change and one must go slow. We are now two months together here and things keep getting better. We filed for our AOS and hope to get AP and visit the family in February. I promised her we would go back often. It has been hard at times and great at times, but I reckon that's what mariage is all about. Stay positive and focused. Good luck to you!!

Oh, I did get her an iPad and she stays connected via facebook and some Thai sites, she loves that!

You will be as fine or well as you choose to be. I moved away from my family to your country two times for work. Finding friends from your own country is important however it is as important for you and your husband that you blend in and find American friends as well. This is the best way to learn the culture and improve your english skills. My best friend is a Filipino man and his wife. I am so happy to have met him and miss him and his family so much. More than I do my American friends in the Philippines.

And YES leaving your Philippine family and friends hurts very bad. Tears will be there but once you say goodbye. Just focus on getting to the counter at the airport and get checked in all will improve. Your mind will be occupied at that point.

I have a Canadian friend I met in Cebu that brought his wife to Canada just this past July. She cried daily for a time period. Her mom would come online and they would cry together. He felt bad. She then after about 4 weeks improved. Now she calls Canada home and does not want to return to Cebu. Her hubby does for a month this winter. She does not lol... See time heals... Remember Skype and YM now makes the world a small place.

Good luck

Thank you so much for the responses.

I will bring my IPAD with me, my two friggin cellphones, my cello, my guitar, my pointe shoes, and my pencils. I told my fiance I could not be ar$ed about clothes cause I can always wash them and such. I am taking all the stuff that I can use to entertain me. I am scared of boredom cause that's when you get all nutty.

This is the first time I will be leaving my parents. I have always been around my mother from driving her to helping her shop. I will sorely miss it. Plus, it does not help that Christmas is just around the corner. It makes things a lot harder.

He said I would not have trouble finding Asian friends since Asians smell each other and most likely they are going to find me. I was happy when I received my visa, but the moment I realised that I will be leaving soon I went emo. I have never went emo and yes, it was kind of new to me. Funny thing is, the stuff the I hated about Manila are the ones I will probably miss with the exception of some local actors and actresses that we have that I seriously loathe.

I pray to God that I wont have any problems settling in and wont have problems being comfortable and such.

Thank you for all the responses. It made me feel a lot better and it is my birthday today.

Happy Birthday!

I really understand the whole deal about Christmas. I had made plans with my wife months ago though that if her interview ended up being anywhere near Christmas that I would come there and celebrate with her family. This will be her last Christmas with them for a few years at least so I want to be sure she has that time for them.

You will do fine, if you come for Manila you will have a easy time adjusting. Know that leaving the PI, family and friends that these feelings are normal. You have a lot to look forward too, and just think of what is to come a big adventure. Everyone who comes to a new country and culture goes through a adjustment period. You will experience different phases, there will be the honeymoon phase at first everything looks wonderful and your excited about being in the USA, and being with your love one there.

At some point you may start getting really homesick, you may start to feel bored, impatient, irritable, frustrated, anxious, sad, or discontent. You may even start to think life in the USA is not all that great. If you experience any of this it is important to let your asawa know your feeling. Just know this is normal feeling and things will get better.

After you get adjusted to your new life, you will start to think of your home in the USA as Home!

1. If you meet one Filipina then you will meet many more......

2. Find a Filipino store in your area, the biggest adjustment is food.

3. Find things to keep you busy, hobbies, get involved with others make some Filipina, and American friends. Find out if there is a Filipino club in the area.

4. Keep in touch with family back home.

5. Get a Zojirushi NP-HBC18 10-Cup rice cooker.

Happy Birthday and have a safe trip.
